Last Game
Earthquakes 1, Kansas City Wizards 0; August 22, 2009; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif.
Chris Wondolowski's goal in second-half stoppage time gave the San Jose Earthquakes a 1-0 victory against the Wizards. There had been chances aplenty up that point, but some sharp goalkeeping from San Jose's Joe Cannon and Kansas City's Kevin Hartman, combined with some wasteful finishing, made it look like a scoreless tie was in the offing. But with time winding down, Wondolowski's glancing header from a Ramiro Corrales cross snuck inside the far post, giving the Quakes a dramatic victory. The Quakes were first to seize the initiative when Alvarez robbed Rauwshan McKenzie of the ball and stung the palms of Hartman with a tight-angled drive inside of a minute. Cornell Glen thought he had opened the scoring a minute later, but he was whistled for pushing Jimmy Conrad into Hartman, prior to shooting into the net from 22 yards. Kansas City recovered to create their first chance in the fifth minute, with Josh Wolff releasing Lopez for a clear look, but Quakes 'keeper Joe Cannon expertly cut down the angle, and smothered the Argentinean's shot. The Quakes just missed going ahead four minutes later. A weak headed backpass by McKenzie was intercepted by Darren Huckerby and his toe-poke from point-blank range went straight into the chest of Hartman. With the Wizards 'keeper stranded, Glen was first to the rebound, but his attempted chip bounced off the base of the post. A wild opening 15 minutes culminated with the ejection of San Jose assistant Ian Russell. At issue was what appeared to be another wayward backwards header from McKenzie that went straight to Glen, who was then whistled for offside. The subsequent howls of protest resulted in the San Jose assistant's dismissal. In the 38th minute, the Wizards' Jewsbury was the next visiting player to be put clean through on goal, but Cannon was once again up to the task, saving from close range. A relatively quiet half for San Jose crackled to life in the 75th minute. Amarikwa's clever turn on Conrad saw him get a clear look at goal, but he could only fire his shot high and wide. Both teams had late chances. In the 87th minute, Arnaud picked out Herculez Gomez on the right wing after intercepting a Cannon throw, but Gomez's weak shot did little to trouble the Quakes 'keeper. Ryan Johnson then received the ball deep in the box, but his attempt crept just wide of the Wizards goal.
Last Game vs. New England
New England Revolution 1, Earthquakes 0; March 21, 2009; Buck Shaw Stadium: Santa Clara, Calif. The San Jose Earthquakes dropped their 2009 season opener, falling 1-0 to the New England Revolution in front of a sellout crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium Saturday night. A 55th-minute goal by Kheli Dube was the difference in a game where San Jose dominated the run of play, but couldn't find the back of the net. A light rain made for a slick pitch, and it took a while for the Earthquakes attack to get rolling. Arturo Alvarez provided some spark in the 25th minute. His run down the right side split two defenders before he got around a third and cut the ball back for Ryan Johnson. But Johnson mis-hit his shot, and when the ball deflected to Darren Huckerby, his blast from 12 yards missed wide right. A few minutes later a Huckerby corner kick was headed wide left by leaping Johnson, and when a Huckerby cross found Alvarez in a tight angle near the right post, Alvarez nodded down a shot directly at Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis. In the 31st minute, Alvarez fired from the top of the restraining arc, and when Reis gave up a rebound, Weaver slammed a shot off the crossbar from close range. It was the closest San Jose would get to scoring. New England got on the scoreboard early in the 55th minute. Jeff Larentowicz chipped a long ball into the box that Kelly Gray tried to flick it away, but it fell right to Dube, who slotted a shot past goalkeeper Joe Cannon and inside the left post. In the 57th minute, Quincy Amarikwa came on for Johnson, as San Jose looked for an equalizer. At the hour mark, Alvarez tried to hook in a shot from 25 yards, but missed high and wide. In the 63rd minute, when Gray's long ball to Amarikwa was knocked down to Huckerby, his shot from the left side was stopped by Reis, well out of goal. Amarikwa then led another rush up field, but fired wide left from 25 yards. In the 68th minute, Shea Salinas replaced Alvarez as San Jose continued to press forward. Four minutes later, a Salinas cross to Amarikwa was deflected wide left from six yards out. San Jose's frustration started to show when Amarikwa picked up a yellow card in the 75th minute, and Eric Denton earned one of his own in the 79th. Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop, searching for the answer, brought on Pablo Campos for Weaver in the 83rd minute. In the 84th minute, a bad clearance off a San Jose corner kick fell to Huckerby, but his volley from 18 yards went over the top. Huckerby then found Campos open at the six yard box, but Campos' header missed badly left.
