Aerodynamics...

Eight is Enough...Erie enjoyed another big performance at the plate yesterday, socking four home runs off Akron pitching for the second straight game and cruising to an 8-1 triumph before 3,101 fans at Jerry Uht Park. The Aeros threatened in the top of the first inning but couldn't capitalize on base hits from CF Jose Constanza and DH Carlos Santana, stranding the runners at first and second. The SeaWovles then wasted little time in taking control of the contest in the bottom of the inning, as the first five hitters all reached base and scored against Akron starter Scott Barnes. A double and a pair of walks set the stage for Ryan Strieby's grand slam, and Casper Wells followed with a solo home run. Santo de Leon added a bases-empty shot just two batters later, staking Erie to a 6-0 lead just seven batters into the game. Strieby homered again leading off the third and de Leon added an RBI double later in the inning, while the Aeros couldn't break through until 3B Jared Goedert drove an RBI double to right-center in the eighth. The SeaWolves improved to 14-8 against Akron this season with the victory.

Closing In...The Aeros got more good news out of Connecticut last night, as the New Britain Rock Cats edged Reading for the third straight night, meaning Akron drew closer to clinching the Southern Division title even with the loss here to the SeaWolves. The Aeros now have a magic number of seven to clinch the division crown, while the club's magic number to claim a playoff spot is six over Erie and four over Bowie. And while the R-Phils remain Akron's closest pursuer in the Southern Division, the SeaWolves have closed to within just a half-game in the standings entering play tonight. This coming week is a critical one for the three wild card hopefuls, as Erie goes to Reading for three games starting tomorrow night and the Baysox head to Reading for four over the weekend.

I Love the 80s...As some of you may remember from the beginning of the season, Akron entered 2009 with four straight seasons of at least 80 victories. This stretch of success equaled the Eastern League record set by the West Haven Yankees from 1976-79, and it was noted that no team in league history (dating to 1923) had ever won at least 80 games in five consecutive seasons. Well, with 16 games left to go the Aeros need just three more wins to set the new league record. Akron also has an outside chance to become just the second club in franchise history to win 90 games in a year, but would have to go 13-3 the rest of the way to do so (the 2002 club set the record with 93 wins under the guidance of current Bowie manager Brad Komminsk).

Did You Know...Aeros 1B Beau Mills has hit 12 home runs this season, with half coming at the expense of the SeaWolves. Beyond that, four of those six homers have been hit here at Jerry Uht Park.
