Back-to-Back Wins for M-Braves

August 19, 2009 - Southern League (SL) Mississippi Braves

Pearl, MS - One night after rallying to win 6-5 in the ninth inning, the M-Braves defeated the Mobile BayBears to take a 2-1 lead in the series Wednesday night. The Braves downed Mobile for Kyle Cofield's 10th win of 2009, 6-2.

Mobile's offense went right to work quickly plating two runs in the top of the first inning. Ricardo Sosa singled home Mark Hallberg and Pedro Ciriaco scored on a groundout by Bryan Byrne.

The M-Braves answered with three runs in the second. With the bases loaded (Greg Creek at third, Kody Kirkland at second and Travis Jones at first), Matt Young singled to first base scoring Creek from third. Byrne's throw sailed over Wes Roemer's head covering first and Kody Kirkland scored on the error. With Brandon Hicks batting, Jones and Young executed a double steal during which Young took second and Jones stole home. After two, Mississippi led 3-2.

With two outs in the sixth, Jeff Lyman walked and Matt Young was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Both runners moved up a bag on a wild pitch and both scored on a single to left by Brandon Hicks. After six, the Braves led 5-2.

Greg Creek got the Braves a run in the seventh. He ripped a one-out double to right and moved to second on a flyout by Kirkland. Creek then scored on a wild pitch and the Braves were up 6-2.

Kyle Cofield gave up two runs on four hits over five innings and picked up his team-high 10th win of 2009. Jeff Lyman threw 1.2 scoreless innings and Brett Butts tossed 1.1 scoreless frames. Craig Kimbrel threw a shutout ninth.

Wes Roemer gave up three runs in three innings and fell to 7-8 on the year. Cody Evans gave up two runs in three innings and Kyler Newby allowed a run in an inning. Jordan Norberto tossed a shutout eighth.

The Braves and BayBears play game four Thursday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. Jose Ortegano takes the hill for Mississippi against Mobile's Matt Torra.

Thursday will be Prostate Cancer Awareness Night as well as Thirsty Thursday when all 16 oz. soft drinks and domestic draft beer will be only $1.
