CORPUS CHRISTI - Collin DeLome tripled, doubled and drove in three runs as Corpus Christi defeated Springfield 5-2 Saturday at Whataburger Field before 5,881.
The Hooks have won three straight while improving to 22-26 in the second half of Texas League play. Springfield is 21-26.
DeLome's sixth-inning two-run double was the biggest blow in a four-run, seven-hit, two-frame surge. Drew Locke and Drew Meyer contributed run-scoring singles and Jimmy Van Ostrand began the seventh with a pinch-hit double.
Meyer and Springfield's Steven Hill had three hits each.
Errors by Meyer at second base and first baseman Mark Ori set the stage for Hill's sacrifice fly in the first as Springfield took a 1-0 lead.
The Hooks answered an inning later when DeLome's triple to center scored Meyer, who'd singled, from first base.
The Cardinals quickly regained a 2-1 advantage on Hill's 19th home run of 2009, a blast that cleared the Zarsky Zone in left field.
DeLome's two-bagger made a winner of Corpus Christi starter Sergio Perez (9-10). In 23 starts this season, Perez has limited the opposition to three or fewer runs on 16 occasions. Saturday he worked six innings and yielded six hits, an earned run and three walks. He fanned one.
Danny Meszaros, Chia-Jen Lo and Evan Englebrook (5th save) pitched a scoreless inning each.
Springfield starter Brandon Dickson (7-9) was tagged for five runs and 11 hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Corpus Christi lefty Andy Van Hekken (6-5) meets southpaw Ryan Kulik (5-8) Sunday at 6:05. The first 1,500 children 12-and-under get a Hooks Backpack, courtesy of Dr Pepper.
