 Quad Cities River Bandits

Two-Out Error Decides Marathon Loss

August 13, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits turned in a dominant 15 innings of pitching on Thursday night, only to watch a two-out error and consecutive infield singles allow the Kane County Cougars to sneak out a 3-2 win after 15 innings and 250 minutes of play at Elfstrom Stadium.

The Quad Cities (21-25, 51-65) bullpen retired 26 consecutive batters at one point, falling just one out shy of a perfect game of sorts after a crucial error in the 15th that led to the game-winning run. Kane County (23-24, 64-53) picked up the win despite collecting only six hits, just three of which left the infield.

It was the longest game Quad Cities has been involved with since dropping a 6-5 contest to Lansing after 16 innings of play on July 23, 2007.

The River Bandits bullpen had not allowed a baserunner since the seventh inning as the game continued into the 15th. The game was tied at 2-2 with two outs in the bottom of the frame when the Cougars' Petey Paramore sent a grounder to short that was back-handed by Domnit Bolivar, but his low throw to first skipped past Xavier Scruggs to extend the inning and snap the stretch of 26 in a row retired. After an infield single put men at the corners, Dusty Napoleon sent a bouncer to the right side of the infield that forced Jason Stidham to make a diving play. He knocked the ball down, picked up the loose ball and made a throw to first from his knees, but it was too late to get Napoleon as Paramore scored the game-winning run.

Kane County's sixth pitcher of the night, Trey Barham (3-0), earned the win after throwing a scoreless top of the 15th. Jonathan Gonzalez (0-2) suffered a tough loss for Quad Cities, fanning three over 1.2 frames and allowing the unearned run and two infield singles.

Despite the loss, the River Bandits bullpen was phenomenal. Matt Frevert allowed a double on the first pitch he threw in the seventh but went on to retired the next six men he faced and strike out four. Ramon Delgado followed with three perfect innings while Dave Carpenter added two, and Gonzalez retired the first five men he faced before the costly error in the 15th. Combined, the quartet of relievers allowed just three hits and one unearned run while striking out 11 over 8.2 innings.

Starter Scott Schneider was also fantastic in his River Bandits debut, allowing just one earned run (two total) on three hits. He carried a one-hit shutout into the sixth, only to watch the Cougars tie the score with a two-run homer.

Quad Cities had taken an early lead in the second when Roberto Espinoza's groundout plated Bolivar. Jarred Bogany added to the lead with a double in the fifth, coming around to score on an infield single by Stidham to push the lead to 2-0. But in the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars evened the score. After an error put a man on base, Steve Parker lifted a towering fly ball to right that cleared the fence for a game-tying, two-run homer.

UP NEXT: The River Bandits wrap up an eight-game road stretch on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. with the finale of a four-game series against the Kane County Cougars at Elfstrom Stadium.
