Wolves Mahoney Honored With McKenzie Award

August 11, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL) Chicago Wolves

Chicago Wolves Vice President of Operations COURTNEY MAHONEY has been named the winner of the American Hockey League's 2008-09 Ken McKenzie Award, presented annually to the AHL team executive who most successfully promotes his or her own club.

MAHONEY has spearheaded the community relations and game operations efforts of the Chicago Wolves for 13 seasons, during which time she ascended from intern to vice president, becoming deeply involved in nearly everything the Wolves organization does off the ice along the way.

"Since being an intern during the birth of the Wolves, Courtney has been a nurturing leader of the organization," said Wolves Chairman of the Board DON LEVIN. "She has created the public persona of the team and without her we would have been much less than we are. I appreciate Courtney every day."

The 34-year-old is the mastermind of the team's charitable and community relations endeavors, including the annual Adopt-A-Dog and Read to Succeed programs. All told, the team has raised more than 4 million dollars for Chicago Wolves charities under her supervision, which includes more than $200,000 during the 2008-09 campaign.

The Western Springs, Ill., native, also oversees the operation of each Wolves home game, which includes playing in-house music and supervising the pre-game pyrotechnics show. Her leadership has helped the Wolves' game presentation become an innovative benchmark within the AHL.

The Ken McKenzie Award, first presented in 1978, honors Ken McKenzie, the founder and long-time publisher of The Hockey News and a 1997 media honoree by the Hockey Hall of Fame as the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award winner. Mr. McKenzie, the NHL's first publicity director and creator of its first media guide, passed away in 2003.
