Deuces Are Wild - Caps Take Both Games

August 6, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Capitals hosted a rarely scheduled double-header against the Chico Outlaws on Wiener Wednesday and took both games to move to within a half game of first place in the North Division in the second half race. The Capitals are now 15-10 in the second half and 38-28 overall.

The late game was full of twos. The Capitals scored two runs in two different innings and starter Chris Little gave up just two runs on two hits through six innings in the 4-3 win. Little (6-2, 4.79 ERA) actually had a no-hitter entering the sixth inning before Chico finally got to him with a pair of base hits. Jason Pearson closed the game for his eleventh save this season.

"I haven't been in that situation a whole lot," said Little about carrying a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, "I just look at it like if it's going to happen, it will happen. I just want to take every pitch one at a time, try and throw strikes and get outs. It can mess with your head if you let it."

At the plate, the Capitals took advantage of a pair of Chico wild pitches and a bases loaded walk to score their second pair of runs that proved to be the difference. Mark Okano scored on the second wild pitch with Aaron Hornostaj at the plate and then two batters later, Jorge Cortes worked a two-out walk to score Chad Ehrnsberger.

In the early game, Joey Gomes led the offense going 2-2 with a pair of doubles that scored Darryl Brinkley twice as well as two walks and three runs scored. Brinkley led all players with three hits in the game. Darryl Brinkley, Chad Ehrnsberger and Matt Ceriani each scored twice to propel the Caps to a 9-4 win.

Lou Pote (8-2, 3.68 ERA) started on the mound and pitched five effective innings to pick up the win. Derrick DePriest finished the game with two shutout innings and was credited with his first save. Chico's Jo Matumoto (4-5, 4.62 ERA) gave up six runs on seven hits and took the loss.

The Capitals take to the road to face Tucson and Yuma for a pair of three-game series beginning on Friday. The next home action will be on Monday, August 17 when the Battle of Alberta continues with the Calgary Vipers. Tickets for all Caps home games are available at the Capitals TELUS Field Box Office, any TicketMaster location, by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625) or by visiting CapsBaseball.ca.
