BOSTON, MA - Wednesday, August 5, 2009 - The Boston Cannons (6-5) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), will match-up against the Washington Bayhawks (4-7) in the Cannons' 2009 season finale at Harvard Stadium on Thursday, August 6 at 7:30 PM. The Cannons, who have already clinched a spot in the postseason, will look to squash the Bayhawks' playoff hopes with a win.
CANNONS VS. WASHINGTON IN 2009: The Cannons dominated the Washington Bayhawks by a score of 19-9 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland on June 19. During the second and third quarters, the Cannons went on a huge run with nine unanswered goals, sealing the victory. Midfielder Paul Rabil led the Cannons with nine points, including two goals, a pair of two-point goals and three assists, to earn the Bud Light MVP award in the game. Both of the Cannons goalies had an impressive night as well, as goalie Mike Levin made 16 saves on the 22 shots he faced during the first three quarters to earn his third win of the season, and goalie Kip Turner stopped nine of the 11 shots he faced during the fourth quarter.
CANNONS' LAST GAME (JULY 23 AT TORONTO): For the fifth time this season, the Cannons lost by one goal as they fell 18-17 in overtime to the Toronto Nationals in front of 3,542 fans at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario on July 23. Midfielder Paul Rabil lead the Cannons in scoring with seven points (5G, 2 2ptG), but it was not enough to lead his team to victory. Cannons goalie Kip Turner started for the second game in a row, and stopped 22 of the season-high 40 shots allowed by the Cannons. Nationals attackman Merrick Thomson was named Bud Light MVP.
WASHINGTON'S LAST GAME (AUGUST 1 VS. CHICAGO): In the basement battle, the Washington Bayhawks kept their very slim playoff hopes alive by besting the Chicago Machine, 17-16, in front of 5,326 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. Midfielder Ben Hunt who was named Bud Light MVP with five goals, and attackman Andrew Combs, with three goals and two assists, paced the Bayhawks in scoring against the Machine. In his MLL debut, midfielder Peet Poillon, a former Cannons draft pick, scored four goals.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Thursday night's game is Cannons Fan Appreciation Night and the team's first-ever "Red Out," where fans will be asked to wear red to show their support of the Cannons...The Cannons will be wearing special red jerseys marking the first time in history that the team has worn third jerseys...With 41 points (21G, 20A) on the season, attackman Sean Morris set a new career high for points in one season...Each of the Cannons' five losses this season have been decided by one goal, and three of them were to the Long Island Lizards...Since the name change from Baltimore to Washington, the Cannons have not been defeated by the Bayhawks and are a perfect 5-0 against the Annapolis-based team...Entering the final game of the season, midfielder Paul Rabil leads the league in scoring with 48 points (30G, 7 2ptG, 11A), just two points shy of 50...The Bayhawks will be fighting for their playoff hopes in this contest, and with a win, could keep their chances alive. Long Island would then need to lose their game for the Bayhawks to make the postseason, but if Washington loses to the Cannons, they are out regardless of the Long Island outcome.
