West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI- Avisail Garcia bounced a two-out, two-run single to centerfield in the sixth to give the West Michigan Whitecaps their first lead of the game as the ‘Caps outlasted the Burlington Bees, 3-2, at Fifth Third Ballpark. The Whitecaps only collected 4 hits in the game, but strong pitching and the timely hitting of Garcia made the difference. Thursday night's win gives the series to the Whitecaps with seven more games remaining in the home stand.
Brayan Villarreal was back on the mound Thursday night. The Whitecaps' right hander got off to a rocky start with two runs allowed in two innings. Villarreal regained command and settled in for the victory over six innings of work. He gave up just 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out seven.
Villarreal wasn't the only ‘Caps' pitcher who threw well. Rob Waite and Tyler Stohr combined for 3 innings of scoreless relief with the duo allowing only 1 hit.
Burlington pushed a run across in the first inning without a hit. The Bees manufactured a score on Patrick Norris' lead-off walk, a sacrifice by Adrian Ortiz and David Wood's sacrifice fly.
The second run for Burlington came in the second. Jose Bonilla scored on Mike Gosse's error, and the Bees had a 2-0 lead after 2 innings.
The score would remain 2-0 Burlington until the bottom of the sixth. The Whitecaps started the inning with a walk to Brent Wyatt and a hit-batsman for Jordan Lennerton. Riquy Pena came on in relief for the Bees, and he proceeded to walk Alden Carrithers and Joe Bowen. Wyatt scored the ‘Caps' first run on a wild pitch, and Garcia's two-run single plated Lennerton and Carrithers for the Whitecaps to jump ahead, 3-2.
Avisail Garcia was the only Whitecap with 2 hits. He finished 2-3.
The Whitecaps entertain the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday night in game one of a three game series. Game time is 7:00 p.m. EST at Fifth Third Ballpark on another ‘Wendy's Tiger Friday'.
