Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Brian Dopirak hit a grand slam in the sixth inning and added a three-run homer in the eighth as the Las Vegas 51s defeated the Portland Beavers 8-4 Wednesday night at PGE Park.

Dopirak put the 51s (50-55) on top in the sixth with his first career Triple-A home run and then secured the win with his second homer of the game two innings later. The infielder went 2-for-4 and collected seven RBIs, the highest single-game total for any 51s player this season.

T.J. Beam (6-2), who took the mound in place of scheduled starter David Purcey, gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out five over six innings.

Seth Johnston hit solo homers in both the second and fifth innings and now has four long balls in six games with the Beavers (46-59) this season.

Cesar Carrillo (0-1), making his first start for the Beavers since 2007, went six innings and allowed five runs (4 earned), including the grand slam, on six hits.

The Beavers took an early 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI double by Val Pascucci in the first inning.

Johnston hit a solo shot to left field in the second frame to give the Beavers a two-run advantage.

Howie Clark knocked in an RBI single in the third to cut Portland's lead in half, 2-1.

Johnston led off the fifth inning with his second solo blast of the game and Yamid Haad doubled, advanced to third on a single by Sean Kazmar and scored on a groundout as the Beavers added to their lead, 4-1.

A fielding error by the Beavers put the leadoff man on first to start the sixth inning. Travis Snider followed with a walk and former Beaver Kevin Howard singled to load the bases for Dopirak, who belted a grand slam to supply the 51s with their first lead of the game, 5-4.

Dopirak followed a pair of walks with a three-run blast in the eighth inning, giving the 51s an 8-4 lead they would not relinquish.

The Beavers face Las Vegas again Thursday night, 7:05 p.m. (Pacific), at PGE Park.

NOTES: The Padres yesterday optioned outfielder Drew Macias to the Beavers ... outfielder Chadd Hartman was transferred to Class A Eugene earlier today ... Carrillo became the 20th different pitcher to start a game for the Beavers this season, setting a franchise record ... former Beaver Dirk Hayhurst gave up one hit and struck out five in two innings of work for the 51s.
