RED BULLS OPEN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ACTION IN TRINIDAD: The New York Red Bulls will take a break from MLS Regular Season action when they compete in their first CONCACAF Champions League tournament when they take on W Connection Thursday night at 8:00 PM ET at Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, Trinidad and Tobago in the first leg of a two-leg, home-and-home preliminary round series.The Red Bulls qualified for the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League after they were a finalist in the 2008 MLS Cup. The winner of the two-game aggregate goals series will qualify for Group D in the Group Stage, where they face Pumas UNAM (Mexico), Comunicaciones of Guatemala and the winner of the Liberia (Costa Rica) and Real Espana (Honduras) series. W Connection, which qualified for the Champions League after winning the Caribbean Football Union Championship in 2009 by defeated the Puerto Rico Islanders, 2-1 in the final, is currently in fourth in the Trinidad and Tobago Professional League with 18 pts. (5-3-3 record). Forward Jonathan Frias leads W Connection in scoring with four goals. Last season, W Connection, coached by Stuart Charles Fevrier, finished in second place with a 22-6-4 record (59 pts.).
New York has played W Connection once on March 18, 2005 - a 1-0 win in preseason action.
Forward Sergio Galvan Rey was the lone goalscorer in that match.
TICKET DETAILS FOR W CONNECTION MATCH: Red Bull New York announced ticket details for the Red Bulls' 2009 CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Round home leg against W Connection of Trinidad & Tobago on Aug. 5 at 8:00 PM ET at Giants Stadium.
Tickets for the home leg are included in 2009 Red Bulls Members' full-season ticket packages. Red Bulls Members can use the "Game A" ticket in their season ticket book for the match. Non-planholders may purchase a Family Pack, which includes four tickets and four Red Bulls t-shirts, for $64.95. The Family Pack is on sale through the Red Bulls' office and website, www.newyorkredbulls.com. Individual tickets for the Red Bulls-W Connection game are also on sale through Ticketmaster and are priced at $20 each. ANGEL ONE AWAY: Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel, a finalist for the 2007 Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player Award, scored his team-high seventh goal in New York's 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy on July 16. Angel is now in sole possession of second place for goals scored in regular season matches - just one goal shy of tying Giovanni Savarese's team record. He has a 0.60 goals per game average, which is tops in club history. Angel is two goals away from the record for goals scored in all competitions.
