Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Lowell Spinners scored six runs in both the second and seventh innings in a 16-6 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.

Willie Holmes and Ronald Bermudez had back-to-back two-run singles to cap off the six-run second inning for a 7-0 Spinners lead. All seven runs (six earned) were charged to Lake Monsters starter Matt Swynenberg (0-2), who allowed seven hits and walked five in just 1 2/3 innings for the loss.

Ryan Westmoreland blasted a solo home run in the fourth for Lowell's eighth run of the game before Vermont got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning with two runs on a Brian Pruitt RBI triple and run-scoring wild pitch. The Spinners added single runs in the fifth on a Derrik Gibson RBI double and sixth on a Joantoni RBI single.

The Spinners six runs in the seventh all came against reliever Shane Erb on a Michael Almanzar RBI single, Bermudez two-run double and a Shannon Wilkerson three-run triple. Vermont scored three runs in the eighth on a Ronnie LaBrie RBI single and Ricky Nolan two-run double, then added another run in the ninth on a Yhonson Lopez RBI single to close out the scoring.

Wilkerson was 3-for-6 with two runs, two triples and three RBI, while Bermudez was 2-for-5 with two runs, a double and four RBI for Lowell, while Westmoreland was 2-for-4 with four runs, two RBI's and his sixth homer of the season. Yeiper Castillo (3-1) allowed two unearned runs on five hits over the firs 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win.

The 16 runs were the most allowed by a Lake Monsters team since July 25, 2006 when Auburn defeated Vermont 16-1 at Centennial Field. With the victory, the Spinners earned a split of the four-game series with the Lake Monsters as each team won a pair of games on the road.

Vermont (19-17) and Lowell (19-17) are now tied for second-place in the Stedler Division behind the first-place Oneonta Tigers. The Lake Monsters and Tigers open up a four-game series on Monday night with the first two games in Oneonta before the series moves to Vermont for games on Wednesday and Thursday beginning at 7:05 pm.
