The Barnstormers had their most productive inning in a week and a strong combined
pitching effort. Put together, they brought a 4-1 victory over the Camden
Riversharks in front of 5,979 Saturday evening at Campbell's Field.The victory ended a five-game losing streak for the Barnstormers (7-10).
Josh Brey (3-5) kept the Barnstormers off the board for three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth. The eruption started innocently enough on a ground single by L.J. Biernbaum off the glove of first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti. Matt Watson followed with a double over the head of right fielder Brian Burgamy. Aaron Herr attacked the first pitch and singled into right center, driving home two. Herr went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a one-out single off the left field wall by Gerard Haran. Anderson Machado followed with a double to left center, sending Haran to third, but Brey settled down, retiring Cesar Suarez and Lloyd Turner on pop flies to end the inning.
Jason Scobie (5-6) stayed largely out of trouble through five innings, escaping two possible threats on double play grounders. Burgamy got to him for a leadoff homer down the right field line to start the sixth. He fanned Bryant Nelson but was lifted after a walk to Jon Knott.
Manager Tom Herr used Ross Peeples to face Brett Bonvechio. The appearance was short as Bonvechio flied to deep center on the first pitch Peeples threw. Ricardo Gomez was next, and while Chiaravalloti stood at the plate, Knott was thrown out stealing second.
Gomez pitched a perfect seventh, and Nick Abel retired the side in order in the eighth, holding the lead. Lancaster provided insurance in the ninth. Haran grounded a double inside the third base bag to start the inning. Pinch runner Vic Gutierrez moved to third on a sacrifice by Machado. Cesar Suarez hit a bouncer to Nelson's right at shortstop. Nelson could not make a clean pickup, and Gutierrez, who was running all the way, scored easily.
Antonio Alfonseca allowed a lone single in the bottom of the ninth to earn his seventh save.
The Barnstormers and Riversharks will wrap up their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:05. Trey Hodges will make the start for Lancaster. The Barnstormers will return home to face Newark Tuesday night and will honor Negro League Baseball.
