Bridgeport flounders Flock

Long Island Ducks News Release


(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Long Island Ducks 4-3 on Saturday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,305 at Citibank Park.

The Bluefish jumped on top in the first using some small ball against Ducks' southpaw Randy Leek. Adam Greenberg reached on a bunt single and moved up on a Tyrone Pendergrass sacrifice bunt. Luis Lopez followed with a RBI double that found the left field corner and plated Greenberg to make it 1-0 Bridgeport.

Ray Navarrete quickly tied the game up for the Flock in the home half of the first. Navarrete took a pitch from Bridgeport starter Matt Pike and belted his 15th home run of '09 off the scoreboard in left-center and the game was knotted at one.

The Ducks took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second. Rob Sandora ripped a two-out single through the right side and Juan Francia walked to put runners on first and second. Johnny Hernandez cleared the bags with a screaming two-run triple to right center and it was 3-1 Long Island.

After a scoreless third, Bridgeport came back with three runs on four hits in the visitor's fourth. A Brandon Sing walk followed by one-out singles off the bats of Ryan Radmanovich and Ryner Bautista loaded the bases. Wilson Batista plated a run on a sacrifice fly to center and Shea Harris brought home a pair with a single through the right side to give the ‘Fish back the lead at 4-3.

Pike (5-5) got the win as he tossed seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out eight. Leek (6-7) fired eight innings, allowing just one earned run, while striking out eight in a losing effort. He retired his last 11 batters, while striking out six. Hector Carrasco worked a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Long Island and Bridgeport conclude their weekend series on Sunday. Game time is set for 5:05 p.m., with the Citibank Park gates opening at 4:05 p.m. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will Yellow and Blue Baseballs by Yellow Dog Lawn Care. Prior to the game, fans are invited down to the field for a pre-game autograph session, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Fans are invited back down to the field after the game for Kids Run the Bases, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.
