Kernels Win Slugfest with Dragons, 11-7

July 12, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels won their second game in a row, this time in a slugfest with the Dayton Dragons, by the score of 11-7 on Sunday afternoon. The game featured 22 hits, 10 walks and three errors between the two teams.

The Kernels erased a Dayton 5-0 lead with a five run fourth inning. After Dayton took the lead, 6-5, the Kernels scored two runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Every Kernels starter had at least one hit as Alexi Amarista was 2-2 with four runs scored and Darwin Perez went 1-3 with a triple and 2 RBI. Anel De Los Santos and Gabe Jacobo both had singles and 2 RBI each.

Kernels starter Will Smith picked up his eighth win, despite allowing six runs (two earned) and seven hits over five innings. Nick Pugliese allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out four over three innings and Chris Armstrong allowed two hits, but no runs in an inning of work.

Dayton starter Lance Janke (4-5) allowed seven runs on seven hits over four innings in taking the loss. Byron Wiley was 4-4 with a HR, double and 3 RBI and Cody Puckett was 2-5 with a HR and two runs scored.

The Kernels wrap up a ten game home stand on Monday with a noon game against Dayton. Gates open at 11 am. Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com , or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 8:30 am on Monday.

After a day off on Tuesday for the MLB All-Star Game, the Kernels hit the road for nine games over ten days with stops in Lansing, Great Lakes and Beloit before returning to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, July 25th.
