South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Appleton, WI - Four walks issued in the middle innings ultimately were the undoing of South Bend in a 5-1 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, South Bend falls back to a game under .500 in the second half, but still maintains a lead in the chase for the playoff spots.
With two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the third, the Timber Rattlers rallied for three runs against South Bend starter Wade Miley (LP, 3-7). Miley walked Peter Fatse and Lorenzo Cain, and then gave up a home run to Corey Kemp to put Wisconsin in front 3-0. It was the fourth home run of the season for Kemp, and moved his RBI total up to 40.
Wisconsin came back for two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Rattlers loaded the bases with nobody out, but Miley got two straight ground balls to third, resulting in two force outs at home. However, Miley followed it up with back to back walks of Fatse and Cain again, forcing in two runs for the 5-0 Wisconsin lead.
Miley went 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits. The left hander struck out three and walked four, with two of the four walks eventually scoring, and the other two walks forcing in runs.
After five shutout innings, the Silver Hawks got to Wisconsin starter Dan Merklinger (WP, 3-2) for a run in the top of the sixth inning. Marc Krauss had a one out double and came home to score on a two out single by Rossmel Perez. Alberto Diaz followed with a single, but Merklinger struck out Ramon Ramirez to end the threat with Wisconsin holding the 5-1 lead.
Daniel Meadows (SV, 2) held the Silver Hawks scoreless for the final three innings to earn his second save of the year.
Victor Capellan (ND) threw three scoreless innings of relief for South Bend, allowing just one bloop hit and striking out three.
The series and the road trip conclude with a 1:05 PM Eastern Time first pitch on Monday afternoon. RHP Ryan Cook (6-7, 4.03 ERA) will try to even his record at .500, with Wisconsin's LHP Efrain Nieves (2-5, 6.59) looking for his third win. Pregame coverage begins at 12:45 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
