Kings' Snap Skid in Shutout Fashion
July 10, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - After seeing themselves on the wrong side of two shutouts in the last three games, the Clinton LumberKings saved face with a 6-0 victory over the Dayton Dragons Friday night at Alliant Energy Field. The win snapped a five-game losing streak.
Right-hander Kenn Kasparek (W, 5-5) matched a career high with 7.0 innings, limiting the Dragons to three hits and just one extra-base hit while striking out five. Closer Ruben Flores entered in a non-save situation and kept Dayton off the scoreboard for the final 2.0 innings, striking out one.
The Kings took a 1-0 lead in the second inning against Dayton spot starter Mark James. Denny Almonte ripped a double into the left-center gap and scored as Nate Tenbrink chopped a single into right. James got out of the inning, getting Blake Ochoa to fly out to left and Jake Shaffer to ground out, stranding Tenbrink.
Clinton plated four more runs on five hits against James in the fourth. Almonte and Tenbrink each reached on one-out singles, and Ochoa dropped down a bunt single on the third-base line, scoring Almonte. Shaffer followed with an RBI double into the right-field corner to plate Tenbrink. Both Ochoa and Shaffer would then score as Daniel Carroll lifted a two-out single into center field to put the Kings ahead, 5-0.
James (L, 1-3) yielded five runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings, striking out two over his first start of the year. Left-hander Andrew Bowman contributed 2.0 scoreless innings before the LumberKings added a final run against lefty Ezequiel Infante.
Tenbrink blasted a solo home run into the Lumber Lounge off Infante in the eighth, capping a 3-for-4 game. His seventh clout of the season made it a 6-0 game.
Aside from Tenbrink's night, Almonte and Carroll both went 2-for-4.
The LumberKings (6-9) open a three-game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits (6-8) tomorrow night. First pitch at Modern Woodmen Park is scheduled for 6:00 PM. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at www.kcln.com.
