Dragons Fall in Clinton 6-0
July 10, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Dayton Dragons News Release
Clinton, Iowa-Kenn Kasparek fired seven shutout innings and the Clinton LumberKings scored four runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 6-0 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Friday night. Clinton avoided a sweep by salvaging a win in the three-game series.
Kasparek allowed only three base runners, giving up three hits and no walks while striking out five to improve to 5-5 on the season.
Dayton starting pitcher Mark James, filling in for J.C. Sulbaran, who will pitch Sunday in the All-Star Futures Game in St. Louis, suffered the loss to fall to 1-3. James allowed just one run over the first three innings but then was touched for five hits and four runs in the fourth. The big hit was a two-out, two-run single by Daniel Carroll that extended Clinton's lead to 5-0.
James exited after three and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and five runs with no walks and two strikeouts.
The Dragons were shutout for the first time since June 19th, the final series of the first half. They advanced only two runners past first base in the game. Byron Wiley had a double for the only Dayton extra base hit. No Dayton player had more than one hit.
Andrew Means had a first inning infield single to extend his hitting streak to nine straight games for Dayton.
The Dragons are 3-4 on their current 10-game road trip.
The Dragons (6-9, 34-51) open a new three-game series at Cedar Rapids on Saturday night at 7:35 p.m. against the Kernels. Oscar Castro (2-2, 6.13) will start for the Dragons against Manaurys Correa (5-5, 3.88). The next home game at Fifth Third Field is Wednesday, July 15th against the Quad Cities River Bandits.
Notes: The Dragons and LumberKings split their six-game season series with each club winning two of three on the road.
