Cougars Nip Bees, Win 2nd Set in Row

July 10, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - With a 5-3 win Friday night against the Burlington Bees, the Kane County won their second series in a row and eighth game in the last 12. The victory, in front of 5,725 at Elfstrom Stadium, helped them take two out of three from the Bees in the start of a six-game homestand. Kenny Smalley posted a quality start, and Matt Fitts and Justin Murray combined for three innings of shutout relief.

The Cougars scored three first-inning runs against Sam Runion. Jeremy Barfield singled home Jason Christian, Dusty Napoleon grounded out to bring in Steve Parker and Petey Paramore's single plated Barfield for a 3-0 game.

Smalley ended up with a no-decision. He gave up two runs in the third and a game-tying solo homer in the fourth. He yielded five hits, walked two and fanned two over six innings and has pitched a quality start six times in his last seven outings.

Fitts (3-6) became the winner when the Cougars scored an unearned run in the seventh versus Riquy Pena (0-1). Chris Berroa walked and later scored on a pair of errors. Then in the eighth off James Thompson the Cougars added a run with a David Thomas sacrifice fly.

The Cougars (9-6, 50-35) continue their homestand Saturday night at 6 CDT with the start of a three-game series against the Great Lakes Loons (6-9, 46-39). Chad Lee (NR) will make his Cougars debut against Josh Walter (5-2, 2.70).
