July 10, 2009 Kevin Hart to Start in Peoria Monday Cubs hurler to face Fort Wayne at 11:00 am

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that pitcher Kevin Hart is likely to be reassigned to the Chiefs and will start against the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at O'Brien Field. Hart is not injured and his start will not be classified as a rehab appearance. He will be placed on the Chiefs roster and given a regular start. He last threw for the Cubs on Wednesday and with both Chicago and Triple-A Iowa in their All-Star breaks, his next opportunity to throw at either level would not have come until Thursday, July 16. Instead of waiting a minimum of eight days between appearances, the Cubs decided to assign Hart to the Chiefs for Monday's start.

Hart, 26, was acquired by the Cubs. In five MLB outings this season he is 0-1 with a 1.69 ERA and four strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings. He has thrown 22 times with Triple-A Iowa this season and has started six games. Hart was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 11th round of the 2004 draft out of the University of Maryland. The Texas native was 18-19 in the Orioles farm system in 2004-2006 pitching in Class A ball before he was traded to the Cubs on December 6, 2006 for Freddie Bynum. Hart pitched in Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa in 2007 going 12-6 in 27 appearances. He made his Major League debut for the Cubs on September 4, 2007 against the LA Dodgers and finished the season with eight MLB appearances and a 0.82 ERA. Hart was also on the Cubs postseason roster in 2007 allowing two runs in one inning in game two of the NLDS against Arizona.

Hart began the 2008 season on the Cubs Opening Day roster and picked up his first Major League win on April 5 against Houston with 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. He had four different stints in Chicago last season appearing in 21 games with a 2-2 record and a 6.51 ERA. When he wasn't in Chicago last season, Hart was throwing for the Iowa Cubs in the Pacific Coast League. With Iowa, Hart was 4-2 with five saves and a 2.81 ERA in 26 games and 10 starts.

Prior to this season, Hart was named as the Cubs #6 prospect by Baseball America. Overall he is 2-3 with a 4.20 ERA in 34 Major League games and 37-30 with a 4.10 ERA in 141 Minor League outings. Hart will start for the Chiefs Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the series final against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The contest concludes a ten game homestand with the entire Midwest League off for the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 14. Monday is a Half-Price Monday with all tickets and group areas half price. It is also Super Splash Day and Summer Camp Day at O'Brien Field. Gates open at 10:00 a.m. and the game can be heard on 96.5 ESPN and www.peoriachiefs.com beginning with the pregame show at 10:45.
