SEATTLE, Tuesday, July 7, 2009 - The Seattle Storm will highlight its Go Green partnerships during Go Green Night Presented by Seattle City Light vs. the Sacramento Monarchs at 6 p.m. this Thursday, July 9 at KeyArena. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive Go Green night lights courtesy of Seattle City Light, plus coupons for a free compact fluorescent light bulb.
In addition, fans can learn more about how to reduce carbon footprint emissions from Carter Subaru on the West Plaza prior to the game and can also recycle through "reuse" by bringing new or used books, which will be collected by Goodwill prior to the game. Storm players will be dressed in away "green" uniforms rather than their home whites, and will wear shooting shirts made of 100-percent organic cotton.
The Go Green Night contest, which will be nationally televised on ESPN2 as part of WNBA Green Week, highlights the Storm's 2009 Go Green initiative, in which the Storm has partnered for the second year with a number of businesses and organizations that share the team's environmental values. Go Green partners and supporting organizations for the Storm's 10th Anniversary season include Seattle City Light, Carter Subaru, Goodwill, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Via Architecture and the Mountains to Sound Greenway.
"By renewing our commitment to the Go Green initiative we launched in 2008, the Storm is proud to continue working with our region's citizens, governments and businesses in an effort to reduce our collective environmental footprint," said Storm Chief Executive Officer Karen Bryant.
The Storm's Go Green partners will provide the following benefits and information this season aimed at inspiring Storm fans to make environmentally-friendly choices:
- Carter Subaru enters its second season with the "3s for Trees" program with spokesperson Lauren Jackson, in which a tree will be planted in the Mountains to Sound Greenway for every 3-point shot made by a Storm player this season.
- Enterprise Rent-a-Car will offer customers the opportunity to offset the carbon dioxide emissions from their rentals.
- Seattle City Light, Goodwill, Via Architecture and the Mountains to Sound Greenway will be providing valuable tips on recycling, reuse and conservation through the online Go Green Guide on the stormbasketball.com Web site.
As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, the Storm has implemented several changes in its business operations: using recycled and Forestry Stewardship Council-certified paper in its business operations; providing retail bags for Storm merchandise purchases at KeyArena that are made of biodegradable material; and replacing the team's printed media guide and press kit with electronic files that are distributed via flash drives. In addition, the team's fan-favorite Thundersticks are made of biodegradable plastic.
Single-game tickets for all Storm 10th Anniversary Season home games, including the July 9 Go Green Night and the 10th Anniversary Celebration Night Aug.1, start as low as $14, and can be purchased by visiting stormbasketball.com, by calling 1-877-WNBA-TIX, or in person at any Ticketmaster retail location.
