Win streak reaches five with 7-5 triumph over Stars

JACKSON, TENN. (July 6, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (10-5) winning streak reaches five with a 7 to 5 victory over Huntsville (7-8) on Monday night. The Jaxx are now two games up on second place Tennessee in the Southern League's North Division. West Tenn has taken the first three games in Huntsville in the series and are now 4-4 in games played at Joe Davis Stadium Justin Souza (6-6) gave the Jaxx seven good innings on Monday night earning the win. Marshall Hubbard, Mike Wilson and David Espinosa all notched two hits in the game. Wilson followed up his 4-for-4 performance on Sunday with a 2-for-4 night at the plate.
The Jaxx got things started in the top of the second inning. David Espinosa drove in Colt Morton with a bases loaded single. Then, Jimmy Mojica grounded into a double play, but scored Guillermo Quiroz to put the Jaxx up 2-0.
After the Stars scored a run in the bottom of the second, the Jaxx scored four in the top of third inning. The Jaxx batted nine in the inning. Mike Wilson's infield single plated Greg Halman, who scored on Kevin Mellillo's throwing error. Colt Morton brought in Marshall Hubbard with an RBI groundout giving the Jaxx a 4-0 lead. Guillermo Quiroz brought in Mike Wilson with a sacrifice fly and David Espinosa drove in Matt Mangini with an RBI single. The Jaxx led 6-1 after the third inning.
The Jaxx ran Huntsville starter, Bobby Bramhall (4-6) from the game in the third. Bramhall gave up six runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work. The loss for Bramhall is the first in four starts against the Jaxx this season.
Shane Justis plated Chuck Caufield with a RBI fielders choice pulling the Stars within 6-2 in the fifth. Mel Stocker scored the Jaxx seventh run on a wild pitch in the sixth. Stocker pinch hit for Greg Halman and doubled down the left field line to open the frame. Halman, the reigning Southern League Hitter of the Week left the game for unspecified reasons.
Justin Souza (6-6) dealt his first seven inning performance of the season. Souza gave up two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking one. Souza had not fared well against the Stars this season going 0-3 with an 11.88 ERA in three stars previously.
The Stars made it interesting once again in the latter innings. Against Nick Hill, the Stars scored three un-earned runs in the eighth inning. Jonathan Lucroy, Taylor Green and Vinny Rottino all knocked in runs. The Jaxx committed two errors in the inning. Anthony Varvaro (S, 4) recorded the final out of the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his fourth save and second in as many days.
The Jaxx go for the sweep on Tuesday night at 7:00 at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville. RHP Steve Bray (1-4, 3.12) makes the start for the Jaxx while Germantown, TN native RHP Mark Holliman (7-2, 4.23) goes for the Stars.
