Drive Break Up No-Hit Bid with Four Run Sixth, Win 5-3

July 6, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - For five innings the Drive had no answers for Savannah's Robert Carson (6-6). The tall lefty wielded 5.0 no-hit innings, before Greenville broke through in a big way which was helped by lackluster defense.

The Drive (43-36, 4-7) made the most of four hits and a pair of Sand Gnats (41-41, 6-6) errors, scoring four runs en route to a 5-3 victory, putting manager Kevin Boles one win shy of his 500th career victory.

Pete Hissey recorded the Drive's first hit of the game in the fifth, a leadoff single, which was followed by a single from Zach Gentile and an RBI-double off the bat of Ryan Dent. After Carson notched a strikeout for the first out, the defense behind him took a vacation.

A routine grounder by Jered Stanley to Jefrey Marte turned into a nightmare for the third baseman, as he committed two errors on the play - a fielding error which allowed Gentile to score from third, and a throwing error that moved Dent to third.

Will Middlebrooks' fielder's choice, which should have been the inning's final play if not for the errors, allowed Dent to score, giving the lead to the Drive. Jon Hee put Greenville up by a pair with an RBI-single up the middle.

Greenville added their final run an inning later when Gentile laid down a sacrifice bunt which Sand Gnats reliever John Church promptly threw away, allowing Oscar Tejeda to score.

Once Drive starter Hunter Strickland left after 5.0 strong innings, it was Fabian Williamson's (6-1) turn to take over. The southpaw scattered three hits and three walks for only one run over the final 4.0 innings, striking out four in picking up the win.

The Drive and Sand Gnats conclude their four-game series in less than 12 hours, as the two teams will meet at 11 AM at Fluor Field. Left-hander Nick Hagadone (0-2, 5.73 ERA) will take the mound for Greenville, as Savannah counters with right-hander Eric Beaulac (4-4, 2.74 ERA).

It's also Wet 'n' Wild Day at Fluor Field, in which the theme of the entertainment will focus on summer camps and youth groups. Single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com for more information.
