Vipers Set Two Franchise Records

July 4, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) - Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers set new franchise records for hits (24) and doubles (11) in a game as they defeated the St. George RoadRunners 18-13 at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah. Calgary scored 15 runs in their first four innings and their bullpen was able to post six straight scoreless frames after the RoadRunners scored all 13 of their runs in the first third of the game. With the win the Vipers avoid a sweep, snap a three game losing streak, and move one game up on Edmonton for first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.

Mac Suzuki was as close to perfect as you can get as he threw two and a third innings and struck out six of seven batters he faced. The newest Viper Todd Moser threw a scoreless inning and two thirds while striking out two while Jon Huizinga pitched a scoreless ninth frame. Andrew DeMott (2-0) picked up the victory in tossing an inning and a third and after St. George scored 13 runs in the first three innings he posted the first scoreless frame in the fourth. Justin Abbott (0-2) took the loss in giving up two runs in two-thirds of an inning.

At the plate Colin Moro tied a franchise record with a five hit night going five-for-six with three runs scored and two doubles. Joe Jiannetti also had a big night with two home runs for a team high nine in total and four runs batted in.

Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard for the fourth straight time in this series in the top of the first inning as Fehlandt Lentini singled, Nelson Castro walked, and Jiannetti launched his eighth home run of the season. Another run was scored for a 4-0 advantage when Moro doubled and scored on a Rick Guarno run batted in two-base hit.

St. George responded right away in the bottom of the frame as Ruddy Yan bunted for a base hit, reached second base on a throwing error, stole third base, and scored on a Angel Sanchez single. Jose Rodriguez followed with a two-run shot for a 4-3 score.

The RoadRunners took the lead in the second inning as Eric Pringle walked and Yosvany Almario launched a two run homer. Ryan Stevenson followed with a double, Yan drove him in with a base hit, and Sanchez made the score 7-4 with a RBI double.

Right back answered the Snakes in the next half inning as Jorge Mejia walked, Jiannetti reached on a fielder's choice, Moro singled, Drew Miller doubled home one, and Rick Guarno brought in two more with a two-base hit to tie the game. Mark Okano followed with a single, Dillon O'Krane gave his team the lead back with a sacrifice fly, Ivan Reyes doubled in a run, and Castro cashed another with a base hit for a six run frame and a 10-7 advantage.

The onslaught of runs continued in the home half of the third as Cody Nowlin, Calderon, and Pringle all walked to load the bases and Stevenson reached on a fielder's choice for a RBI. After a walk to Yan, Sanchez plated two with a hit, and Valentine smoked a three-run shot for a six run St. George frame and a 13-10 lead.

Calgary again responded in the next half inning as Jiannetti and Moro hit back-to-back solo home runs to start the frame, Miller followed with a single and Okano smashed a two run shot to give his team their third lead of the night. Reyes and Castro followed with back-to-back doubles for a fifth run of the inning and a 15-13 advantage.

The Vipers added two runs to the lead in the fifth as Miller doubled and scored when Guarno singled and the throw to the plate was dislodged by the slide of Miller. Okano followed with a RBI double to score Guarno for a 17-13 lead.

Another run was scored in the top of the eighth as Castro doubled and scored on a Jorge Mejia RBI single for a 18-13 advantage.

The Vipers now head to Yuma, Arizona for a three-games-in-two-days series on Saturday July 4th at 8:00 PM MDT, and a double-header on Sunday July 5th at 6:00 PM MDT the Vipers will take on the Yuma Scorpions.
