FISHKILL, N.Y. (July 3, 2009) - The Hudson Valley Renegades split the doubleheader with the Vermont Lake Monsters one game apiece. The Renegades took game one, 2-1, and came up short in game two falling to Vermont, 4-2.
In the Renegades first doubleheader of the season Dutchess Stadium saw more fans then she has ever seen before. 5,224 fans came out to Dutchess Stadium Friday night to cheer on the Renegades and enjoy some of the best fireworks in the Hudson Valley.
The Renegades pitching staff came to play giving up just one hit over seven innings in game one. Starter Alexander Colome hurled 4 2/3 innings of one-hit, one run baseball striking out five. Reliever Bladimir Florentino was awarded the win after he left the Lake Monsters hitless through 1 2/3 innings.
The Renegades offense took the lead in the home half of the fourth and never gave it up. Juan Jamie came into the game to start the fourth in relief of starter Trevor Holder and Renegades batters took advantage of Jamie's lack of control. With two outs and a runner on first, Jamie walked Eli Sonoqui, hit Brett Nommensen and then walked both Mark Thomas and Bennett Davis allowing the Renegades to etch two runs.
With the score 2-0, in favor of the Renegades, the Lake Monsters recorded their only offense of the night. With the bases loaded and one out the Lake Monsters' Jay Sferra grounded out allowing Justin Bloxom to advance 90 feet and bring the score to its final, 2-1.
Game two started out as a pitchers dual with both teams' starters putting zeros on the board for the first three innings. Both teams' offenses broke through the stellar pitching trading two runs apiece brining the score to 2-2 following the conclusion of the fourth.
The Lake Monsters offense continued plating a run in the fifth and sixth innings to bring the score to 4-2, in favor of Vermont. With runners on second and third in the sixth inning Sean Nicol singled to left field Jack Walker to cross home plate for Vermont's fourth run of the game.
Tomorrow morning the Renegades travel to Vermont to do battle with the Lake Monsters in a three-game series. The Renegades will be giving the ball to Kyle Ayers (1-1, 1.86) with the first pitch slated for 4:05 p.m.
