Renegades Drop Fifth in a Row After 2:42 Rain Delay

July 2, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL) Hudson Valley Renegades

FISHKILL, N.Y. (July 1, 2009) - After a two hour forty-two minute rain delay the Renegades fell to the Vermont Lake Monster ,8-2, with the final out recorded at 12:54 Thursday morning.

The rain delay did not affect Renegades catcher Mayo Acosta or left field Brett Nommensen as both combined to knock five of the Renegades eight hits on the night. Acosta went 3-for-4 with one run scored and Nommensen went 2-for-4.

Renegades starter, Kyle Lobstein (0-2, 3.65) recorded his second loss of the season as he hurled four innings of four-hit, one-run baseball.

The Lake Monsters etched the first run of the game in the visiting half of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs Francisco Soriano singled to left field which allowed Justin Bloxom to advance 90 feet to give Vermont a one-run lead.

Vermont's lead increased to 3-0 on another Soriano RBI single. With two outs, and runners on second and third Soriano hit a bases clearing single which gave the Lake Monsters pitching staff some breathing room.

The Renegades attempted a rally but came up short etching a run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings. The Renegades recorded their first run of the game in the sixth on a bases loaded single off the bat of Bennett Davis. Davis hit a sacrifice fly to left field which allowed Tyler Bortnick to score from third bringing the score to 3-1, in favor of Vermont. Eli Sonoqui was thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.

The Lake Monsters struck back quickly with a run of their own in the top of the seventh. Vermont greeted the new Renegades pitcher, Richard De Los Santos, with a Sean Nicol lead-off double. Nicol advanced to third on a single and scored two at-bats later on a chop single to De Los Santos. Nicol's run brought the score to 4-1 Vermont.

The Renegades plated another run in the bottom of the seventh but it would not be enough as the Lake Monsters put up a four spot in the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded Jack Walker hit a bases clearing double which gave Vermont a 7-2 lead. The Lake Monsters brought the score to its final, 8-2, knocking in Walker from second on a Brian Pruitt single to left field.

Tomorrow the Renegades take on the Vermont Lake Monsters for game two of the three-game series. Vermont will be giving the ball to southpaw Graham Hicks (0-1, 9.39) and right-handed pitcher Alexander Colome (1-1, 3.72) will get the nod for the Renegades. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
