Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release
Washington, DC - The Washington Bayhawks (1-5) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) travel west this weekend for a matchup with the Chicago Machine (1-5). The two teams will square off at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, WI at 8pm EST. This is the first game of the season between the two squads as the Bayhawks look to move a game ahead of the Machine in the MLL standings.
The Bayhawks and Machine have played each other two previous times since Chicago entered the MLL in 2006. The Bayhawks won both meetings including an 18-14 victory at Chicago last season. Washington squares off with Chicago three times this season as the teams will meet again on July 25th in Chicago, IL and August 1st in Annapolis, MD.
The Bayhawks are in the midst of four game losing streak after falling to the Boston Cannons last weekend by a score of 19-9. The Machine opened the season with a road victory at Denver but have gone on to lose five straight. Last week Chicago came up short of their second win with a 15-14 loss against the Long Island Lizards.
Kevin Huntley continues to shine for the Bayhawks. He is coming off last week's impressive outing in which he had five points (4G, 1A). Huntley also tallied his first 2-point goal against the Cannons. His four goals gave him 50 career goals in just his second season in the league. He and Midfielder Kyle Dixon lead the team in goals with 14 each.
Dixon and Huntley received individual accolades from the league this past week. The MLL announced the 2009 All-Star Roster and named both players to the team although they will not play alongside each other. The All-Star game format is "Old School versus the Young Guns." Huntley and Face-Off Man Alex Smith will play for the Young Guns while Dixon and Attackman Spencer Ford are on the Old School Roster.
Bayhawks rookie Ben Hunt will make his debut in the MLL this Saturday. Hunt, an Annapolis native, will look to continue the trend of impressive rookie play. Jeff Reynolds played in his first MLL game last Friday against the Cannons while rookie Matt Abbott recorded his first point of his career scoring a goal.
The Bayhawks will look to Chris Garrity and Chris Collins this week to stop the Machine's offense. Collins has split time in cage the past two games with Joey Kemp, who was placed on the Bayhawks practice squad this week. Collins recorded nine saves against Boston this past Saturday. Garrity played in the Bayhawks first four games of the season compiling a 1-3 record losing two of his four games by two goals or less.
The Bayhawks return home on Saturday, July 4th for their Military Appreciation Night game against the Long Island Lizards. The game will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD, and game time is set for 6:15pm. Fans will be able to enjoy the Annapolis fireworks display following the game over the Chesapeake Bay. Tickets for the game are still available. Reserve your seats by calling the Bayhawks Ticket Office at 866-99-HAWKS or by going to the Bayhawks website at www.washingtonbayhawks.com.
