Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced the team has signed forward Ben McLeod ["mc LOUD"]. Last season, McLeod (5'9/185) (26), who hails from Edmonton, Alberta, scored a total of thirteen goals and assisted on twenty-five others (thirty-eight points) in sixty-seven ECHL games, the last twelve of which were with the Royals.

McLeod, who will be entering his third year of pro hockey, began last season with the Cincinnati Cyclones where he played fifty-five games (8g-19a=27pts) before being traded to the Royals on March 8, 2009, in a five-player swap that sent Mac Faulkner and Gerard Miller to the Cyclones in return for Ben Gordon, Tom Sawatske, and McLeod (and future considerations). McLeod promptly went on a tear for the Royals, registering at least a point in seven of the twelve games he played for Reading (5g-6a=11pts), which included a three point outburst (1g-2a) in the final game of the season.

McLeod, who played to a plus-five during his tenure with the Royals (and a plus-eight over the course of the season), began his pro career in the German Oberliga, where he racked up sixty-three points (25g-38a) in fifty-five games, which placed him third in scoring for Kaufbeuren ESV. Prior to turning pro, McLeod had an outstanding Canadian university career at the University of Ottawa, where he led the team in scoring-and was selected as team MVP-during each of his three seasons with the Gee-Gees. McLeod's university career culminated with an offensive explosion, as he racked up forty-six points (23g-23a) in twenty-seven games for UO, placing him second in the nation in scoring. That year, McLeod also became the first player in UO school history to receive the R.W. Pugh Award as the Most Sportsmanlike Player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport hockey.

The Royals open the 2009-10 ECHL season on Thursday, October 15, 2009 (7:05 pm) when the Kalamazoo Wings make their first visit ever to the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. Season tickets for the Royals' 2009-10 season are currently available. To become a part of Royals hockey, call 610-898-PUCK or log onto www.royalshockey.com.
