Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things (9-16), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, rallied after being down 7-0 to defeat the Traverse City Beach Bums (13-12) 16-8 Thursday night at CONSOL Energy Park.

With the game tied at seven going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Wild Things rode the back of designated hitter Jacob Dempsey's three-run homerun and a wild pitch to take an 11-7 lead. Catcher Kris Rochelle began the inning with a single to center. A hit batter and walk loaded the bases, and after a wild pitch by pitcher Greg Ford, Dempsey connected for his eighth of the season.

Early on, it was all Beach Bums, who jumped out to a 7-0 lead through two and a half. Wild Things' starter Brian McCollough struggled through three innings and gave up ten hits while striking out one. The Beach Bums' offense was led by outfielder Mike Epping and third baseman Kyle Maunus, each with RBI doubles. Maunus added a second double later, and designated hitter Mike Victor went 3-4 with three singles.

The Wild Things' offense got started in the third when first baseman Grant Psomas hit his ninth homerun of the season that drove in three. Rochelle cleared the bases with a three-run double in the fourth to make it 7-6. The hit knocked Beach Bum starter Shawn Joy out of the game, after he gave up six hits, six runs and struck out four while walking two through three plus innings of work. The Wild Things tied the game later on a single by third baseman Chris Raniere.

Second baseman Michael Parker added a solo homerun in the seventh. Just to make sure, the Wild Things scored three more in the eighth fueled by a two-run double by outfielder Phil Laurent who finished his night 3-5. Rochelle finished the night 3-5 with a pair of single and the RBI double.

Wild Things' pitcher Sean Heimpel earned his first win of the season, and improved his record to 1-3. He went five innings, giving up only one run on a solo homerun to Beach Bum shortstop Brad Miller. Heimpel gave up four hits with two strikeouts and walked just one batter, a category he had struggle in coming into the game.

The Wild Things and Beach Bums continue their series Friday night at CONSOL Energy Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:55 on 95.3 WJPA FM. A Zambelli fireworks display will follow the game.
