Summer Player Profile: Michael Caruso

June 12, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL) Rochester Americans

(Rochester, NY)... Michael Caruso, one of the Florida Panthers fourth-round picks in the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft, completed his first full season as a pro and as a member of the Rochester Americans in 2008-09. The 6-foot-2, 191-pound left-handed defenseman appeared in 73 games for the Amerks, contributing 10 points for the season with one goal and nine assists. Already working hard for next season, Caruso took time off to answer a few questions for Amerks.com about his life in the offseason.

1.) What was the high point of the 2008-09 season?

The high point of my season, I would say, was when I was given the "A" on my jersey in November. It is nice to be recognized as a team leader.

2.) Where did you go after the season ended?

After the season, I came home to Mississauga (Ontario) for a couple weeks and then took off to St. Maarten for a week of vacation.

3.) When will you begin on-ice training?

I will probably start up my on-ice training in July. The first part of my summer training is done solely in the gym.

4.) What are you working on to get to the NHL?

Everything really, I know I need to improve all aspects of my game to get to the NHL, but my primary focus for this summer is to put on an extra 10-15 pounds of muscle for the coming season.

5.) How do you spend your free time?

I spend the majority of my free time just relaxing with my friends here in Mississauga and playing my guitar.

6.) What is your favorite vacation spot?

My favorite vacation spot is St. Maarten. I've been three times now and love it more each time.

7.) Did you watch the NHL Playoffs? If so, what team are you pulling for?

Yes, I have been watching the NHL playoffs pretty closely. If I had to choose a remaining team I'd like to see Pittsburgh win it.

8.) Any plans for the summer?

My summer plans are basically just to work hard in my training, visit as many old friends as I can and I plan on catching a few concerts within the area.

9.) Who is your favorite athlete?

My favorite athlete is Tiger Woods.

10.) What's one thing you can't live without?

My friends.

11.) In the summer, do you prefer to work out or cook out?

I would prefer to cook out, but unfortunately I end up doing a lot more working out.

12.) What is your favorite junk food?

My favorite junk food is ice cream.

13.) Do you use Twitter?

No

14.) What is your favorite sports movie?

Remember the Titans

15.) What do you enjoy the most about playing in Rochester?

I've never played with such a great group of people for teammates. It makes it very enjoyable to come to the rink every day.

16.) Who on your team is destined to become a reality TV star?

Randall Gelech

17.) Why is hockey the best sport?

I think hockey is the best sport because it's the fastest, most exciting and most physical game on earth.

18.) Are you looking forward to 2009-10?

I am very much looking forward to the upcoming season and helping turn the Amerks back into contenders.
