Sergio, Sutil, DeLome Slap RockHoundsJune 11, 2009 - Texas League (TL) - Corpus Christi Hooks Press Release
The Hooks have won three straight and five of six in improving to 26-30. They are six games behind the Texas League South Division-leading RockHounds, who stand 33-25.
Perez (4-5) won his third game of 2009 with six shutout frames. He ceded just four hits, walked one and struck out two. Fifty-two of his 75 pitches were strikes.
His counterpart, Midland starter Bobby Cramer, cruised through the first two innings. He recorded five swinging strikeouts before running into one-out trouble in the third.
Felix Molina lined a single to right for Corpus Christi's initial hit and advanced to second on an infield safety by Sutil. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Kaz Matsui's ground out plated Molina and Drew Locke's infield bleeder sent Sutil home for a 2-0 Corpus Christi advantage.
Locke came up big in the Midland fourth when he slid for a sinking liner in right field off the bat of Alex Valdez with two gone and the bases loaded.
Cramer (3-4) lasted into the fifth, when he exited with a man on and two outs after 101 pitches. The lefty yielded six hits, issued a base on balls and fanned seven. His replacement, Angel Garcia, promptly walked the bases loaded but wiggled out of trouble when Jason Castro's swinging bunt was smothered by catcher Josh Donaldson, who promptly turned around and stepped on the plate.
Sutil's two-out RBI single the next inning gave the Hooks a 3-0 lead. His third hit of the night scored Mitch Einertson, who opened the sixth with a single and scooted to second on a wild pitch.
An opposite-field, eighth-inning, two-out, two-run blast by Collin DeLome off James Heuser into the Zarsky Zone provided the final margin. DeLome's 13 round-trippers - three in the last four games - lead the TL.
Jose Valverde, Chia-Jen Lo and Danny Meszaros each tossed a shutout inning in relief. Valverde, the Astros closer, completed a two-game rehab assignment and returned to Houston afterwards.
The Hooks send Casey Hudspeth (4-4) to the mound against Graham Godfrey (5-4) Friday night at 7:05. It's Bud Light Friday Fireworks postgame.
