SANDY, Utah (Saturday, June 6, 2009) - Colorado Rapids forward Omar Cummings scored an equalizing goal in the 88th minute to give the Rapids a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium Saturday night. With the result, Colorado move their unbeaten streak to six games.
Real Salt Lake proved to be the aggressors early outshooting the Rapids 12-to-2 in the first half. Despite the discrepancy, the Colorado defense were up to the challenge holding the score to 0-0 at the break.
RSL forward Yura Movsisyan finally broke through for the contest's first score in the 79th minute after his move to the inside of the box created just enough space to fire a left footed shot pass two Colorado defenders and to the far post past goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
The home side would find themselves a man down three minutes later when defender Robbie Russell picked up his second caution of the match following a reckless tackle on Colin Clark.
The Rapids were able to take advantage of the situation when Cummings registered his third goal of the season minutes later.
Mehdi Ballouchy tallied his fourth assist of the year when he split two Real Salt Lake defenders with a pass, as Cummings let the ball run beside him and into the penalty area.
Cummings then struck the ball while in full stride with a powerful right foot sending it over the head of RSL 'keeper Nick Rimando, skimming off the top crossbar and down into the side netting from close to 18-yards out.
Based on tonight's finish and Colorado's earlier 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake back on May 2, the winner of the Rocky Mountain Cup for this season will come down to the third and final meeting between these two rivals in the regular season finale on October 24 at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The Rapids take a break from regular season play next week with a bye before returning to host D.C. United at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on June 20 at 7:30 pm MT.
