Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - David Adams drove home four runs and scored the game-winning run in the ninth on Ray Kruml's one-out single as the Charleston RiverDogs claimed first place with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the Rome Braves in South Atlantic League action Saturday in front of 4,091 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory the RiverDogs capture the first game of this key three-game series as both clubs entered the game tied for first place. Charleston now sits atop the Southern Division standings with a 32-23 record as the Braves fall one game back at 31-24.

Tied at 6-6 in the ninth, Adams led off by drawing a walk off Braves reliever Angelo Paulino (2-1), who balked Adams to second. Adams stole third base as Melky Mesa fanned, and Kruml slapped the first pitch up the middle for the game-winner.

Adams had two of Charleston's nine hits and his four RBI overshadowed a 3-for-5 and one RBI hitting performance by second baseman Jose Pirela. Dan Brewer also recorded a pair of hits.

The RiverDogs jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first when Brewer lined a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a fielding error. Adams cracked a single up the middle to plate Brewer for the game's first run.

Rome captured a 2-1 advantage in the top of the second on a single, one walk and two wild pitches off of RiverDogs starter Andrew Brackman, who labored for his 3.2 innings of work in which he allowed four runs on three hits while walking five and striking out five.

Charleston knotted the game at 2-2 in the third when Jose Pirela legged out an infield single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Brewer reached on a fielding error that allowed Pirela to sprint to third and Pirela scored on Adams' groundout.

The Braves seized a 4-2 lead in the fourth frame when Samuel Sime drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then dashed to third on Joel Campusano's double to left. With Barba batting, Sime scored on another Brackman wild pitch.

Rome extended its lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning when Calvin Culver drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on Schlehuber's single. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position and both scored on a single to left by Sime.

In the RiverDogs' seventh in which they knotted the game at 6-6 with a four-run outburst, 10 Charleston batters went to the plate and Rome went through four pitchers.

Taylor Grote led off with a single, Mitch Abeita walked and Grote moved to third on a flyout and scored when Pirela stung a RBI single. With the sacks packed on Brewer's single, Adams lined a single to right that scored two more while Brewer advanced to third on a fielding error. Throwing his first pitch, Rome reliever Clayton McMillan uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Brewer to score the game-tying run.

Charleston reliever Brad Rulon earned the victory to improve his record to 4-1 as he pitched the top of the ninth and struck out one Brave.

The RiverDogs' bullpen made a major contribution as Brandon Braboy, Cory Arbiso and Rulon combined for 5.1 innings of work while allowing two runs on two hits while walking only one and striking out six. The trio also retired the final 14 Rome batters which included a combined four hitless innings from Arbiso and Rulon.

Joel Campusano paced the Braves with two of their five hits.

Charleston manager Torre Tyson will hand the ball to southpaw Manny Banuelos (3-2, 2.98 ERA) in Game 2 with first pitch set for 5:05 p.m., while Rome manager Randy Ingle counters with right-hander Randall Delgado (1-5, 5.97 ERA).
