Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

SALISBURY, MD - Despite scoring in just one inning, the Delmarva Shorebirds did enough damage in the first inning to sneak past the Lakewood BlueClaws 3- 2 in game one of a doubleheader.

In the first, off of Heitor Correa, the Shorebirds (28-22) got the leadoff batter Xavier Avery on with a bunt single, followed by another single by Ron Welty and a run- scoring groundout. Joe Mahoney then tripled in Welty for the second run before a wild pitch allowed Mahoney to score to take a 3-0 lead.

Correa (2-2) would then settle down to throw a complete game, six innings, allowing those three runs and six hits. The bad first would doom Correa and the BlueClaws (31-22).

In the sixth, the BlueClaws struck back with a run as Jim Murphy hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to make it 3-1 before things got interesting in the seventh.

Brandon Cooney relieved Eddie Gamboa in the seventh and walked the first two hitters he faced. Sebastian Valle struck out before Harold Garcia battled and hit an RBI-single to make it a 3-2 game with runners on first and second with one out. Cooney then settled to get Anthony Gose swinging and Steve Susdorf to ground out harmlessly.

Drake (2-2) picked up the win as he went five innings and did not allow a run. Gamboa allowed the home run to Murphy before Cooney picked up his eighth save of the season.

The win ties the BlueClaws in the loss column with Delmarva and just 1.5 games ahead of the Shorebirds. The Shorebirds are now 7-2 this season against the BlueClaws.

The third and final game of the shortened series takes place at 7:05 on Saturday. It will feature Jesus Sanchez (1-4) against Nathan Moreau (1-1).
