Sussex and Quebec Split Doubleheader

June 6, 2009 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) Sussex Skyhawks

AUGUSTA, N.J. - After Friday night's rainout, the Sussex Skyhawks and Quebec Capitales split Saturday afternoon's doubleheader at Skylands Park. Sussex took the first game, 4-2, behind a solid performance from starter TJ Stanton, while Chris Allen pitched Quebec to a 3-2 victory in Game 2.

GAME ONE: Sussex starter TJ Stanton (1-1) gave up two runs over six innings and the Skyhawks scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn a 4-2 decision. Maikel Jova singled home Jorge Moreno with the go-ahead run. Sussex leftfielder Ryan Crespi tied the game earlier that inning with a solo homerun to left.

Sussex's Matt Petrusek threw a scoreless seventh to earn his second save of the young season.

Quebec took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second when Morgan Brown doubled in Eddie Lantigua and Pete LaForest. Capitales starter Ivan Blanco took the loss for Quebec.

GAME TWO: Quebec starter Chris Allen gave up just one hit over six innings, walking one and striking out four, as he pitched the Capitales to a 3-2 win over Sussex in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Allen did not give up a hit until Mark Pappas singled to right with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chris Castle pitched the seventh to earn his first save of the season. Mike Schellinger (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Sussex.

Quebec jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Pete LaForest blasted a two run home run. Eddie Lantigua's RBI single in the third extended the Capitales' lead to 3-0.

Sussex made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh when Ryan Crespi singled and Maikel Jova blasted a home run to left, making it a 3-2 game.

The Skyhawks and the Capitales will play the final game of the four games series at Skylands Park on Sunday afternoon at 2:05.
