Loree Fires Seven Shutout Innings in 5-0 Win
June 3, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL) Augusta GreenJackets
Rome, GA - Mike Loree gave the Augusta GreenJackets all he had in seven fantastic innings against the Rome Braves and the Jackets offense woke up from a two-day slumber to post four runs in the seventh en route to a 5-0 win over the Braves at State Mutual Stadium on Wednesday night.Loree got in and out of trouble a couple times and was helped by a defense that turned two double plays behind him. He got an early run when Josh Mazzola doubled to deep left-center to score Vladimir Frias in the first.
With a 1-0 lead, Loree delivered perhaps his finest performance of the year. Loree (2-4), in his first start since May 14th, fired seven scoreless innings, scattering five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
The Augusta offense came to life in the seventh off Rome's Jacob Thompson. Andy D'Alessio doubled to open the inning and moved to third on Juan Perez's flyout. After Johnny Monell walked, Ehire Adrianza hit a sacrifice fly to left to give the Jackets a larger cushion. With two outs, Charlie Culberson doubled to bring the lead to three and Wendell Fairley singled to score Culberson. Mike Loberg doubled to the right field corner to put the exclamation point on a four-run inning and chase Thompson.
Thompson (2-5), who equaled Loree zero-for-zero until the sixth, threw 6.2 innings and allowed all five runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Justin Fitzgerald struck out the side in a scoreless eighth and Daniel Runzler preserved the shutout with a strikeout in the ninth to end the game.
Both teams showed excellent defenses as the Jackets and Braves both turned a pair of double plays each behind their starting pitchers.
With the series split at a game apiece, the Jackets will hand the ball to Eric Surkamp (3-1, 4.23) to face Brett DeVall (3-2, 2.43) in a battle of lefties on Thursday night. First pitch from State Mutual Stadium comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com. The GreenJackets return home for a three-game series with the Savannah Sand Gnats beginning with a 7:05 start on Saturday June 6th.
