Kernels Homestand Preview

May 19, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL) Cedar Rapids Kernels

The Kernels open their fifth home stand of the season starting Wednesday, May 20th against the Great Lakes Loons - here's a rundown of what you can expect each day:

May 20-22 vs. Great Lakes Loons

The Kernels open a three game home series against the Great Lakes Loons, the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free player magnet of former Kernel and Angels' pitcher John Lackey, courtesy Xquisite Limo, Mix 96.5 FM and WMT AM 600. The Kernels welcome fans from Hoover and Truman Elementary schools to the game. Gates open at 5:30 pm with first pitch set for 6:35 pm.

Take a break from the office as the Kernels host their second noon game of the year, on Thursday, May 21st. It's a 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday where 12 oz. draft beer is just $1.50 during the game. Gates open at 11 am and the Kernels and Loons start at 12:05 pm.

The Kernels and Loons wrap up their three game series on Friday, May 22nd on Z 102.9 Progressive Beer Friday. Get here when the gates open at 5:30 pm as 16 oz. draft beer starts at $1 and goes up a dollar each hour until reaching full price. The Kernels welcome students from Van Buren and Viola Gibson to their school night at the stadium. Game time is 6:35 pm.

May 23-25 vs. Lansing Lugnuts

The Kernels continue their six game home stand with three games against the Lansing Lugnuts, the Midwest League affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, on Saturday, May 23rd. It's a busy day at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium as the Cedar Rapids Symphony and Orchestra Iowa present a pre-game concert featuring the music of the Eagles starting at 4:00 pm. Following the game, enjoy a spectacular post-game FIREWORKS show. Individual tickets for this game are in VERY short supply, so the Kernels have opened up the Miller Mezzanine to the public with tickets on the Mezzanine just $11, which offers a great view of the fireworks show. Gates open at 3:00 pm for Symphony ticket holders and at 5:30 pm for the Kernels game, with first pitch set for 6:35 pm.

Celebrate the Memorial Day Weekend with a pre-game pancake breakfast on Sunday, May 24th. Enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee from 8 am to 11 am. Following the breakfast, take in the game as the Kernels and Lugnuts square off at 2:050 pm. Tickets for the pancake breakfast are $6 for adults and $4 for children 12-under, or purchase a combo breakfast/game ticket for $12.50 and just $10.50 for kids. It's a KDAT Sunday Family Day, which means fans can get autographs from the Kernel players on the concourse from 1:20 to 1:40 pm. Papa Balloon, a local balloon artist, will be on the concourse during the game to entertain fans with his balloon art skills, and fans can play Travel Advisors Baseball Vacation Bingo during the game for a chance to win a trip to Anaheim and an Angels game in the 2010 season. Following the game, play catch in the outfield and run the bases. Gates open at 1:00 pm for a fun Sunday afternoon.

Memorial Day is the ‘unofficial' start of Summer and the Kernels invite you to an afternoon game as the Kernels and Lugnuts wrap up their series starting at 2:05 pm. You could win a night in the Pepsi Diamond Suite, or one of many other prizes as part of Pepsi Day at the stadium. The Kernels welcome guests from Trinity Lutheran School to their day at the ballpark. Gates open at 1:00 pm for a special 2:05 Memorial Day start.
