Big Eighth Lifts Sky Sox

May 18, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

In what started out as an air tight game, the Sky Sox found themselves winning big by a score of 11-6 after Omaha imploded in the eighth inning in front of 2,025 fans at Security Service Field.

Omaha took the lead early scoring two runs in the second inning, one by way of an RBI single by third baseman Travis Metcalf off Sox starter Jason Hirsh, the other coming off an RBI groundout by center fielder Jose Duarte.

The Sky Sox answered right back in the bottom of the third inning when Jonathan Herrera hit an RB I triple off Royals starter Heath Phillips, followed by an RBI single coming from Eric Young Jr. The Sox capped off the inning when Matt Miller hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing home Young Jr giving the Sox the lead at 3-2.

The Royals were able to tie the game up at 3-3 in the seventh inning when Tommy Murphy singled home Jose Duarte. After holding the Sky Sox scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, Omaha would score again in the eighth as Duarte grounded out with the bases loaded bringing home J.R. House giving the Royals a 4-3 lead.

The bottom of the eighth inning would be one the Royals would like to forget, as they self destructed giving up eight runs to the Sky Sox. In relief of Phillips, Carlos Rosa (0-4) gave up six earned runs walking three and throwing two wild pitches. Each wild pitch caused a run to cross the plate.

Ryan Mattheus made his 2009 debut for the Sky Sox coming in to finish the ninth inning. Omaha scored two runs off Mattheus coming by way of a two-run bomb by designated hitter Brayan Pena giving the game a score of 11-6, which would prove to be the final as Mattheus was able to close the Royals out to end the game. Mattheus finished the game giving up those two runs adding a walk and a strikeout.

The final game of the four game series will be held tomorrow night at 6:05 PM and will feature Kurt Birkins (0-1, 7.20) for the Sox versus Matt Wright (0-0, 6.75) of the Royals.
