RedHawks Take Two against Tacoma
May 18, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - Oklahoma City Baseball Club News Release
The Oklahoma City RedHawks swept a split doubleheader with the Tacoma Rainiers Monday at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, winning game one 3-0 and taking game two 9-1. Three pitchers combined to shutout the Rainiers on seven hits in game one, while four pitchers combined to allow one run on eight hits in game two.
Oklahoma scored early to take game one. Julio Borbon walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning and scored on Esteban German's second home run of the season. Casey Benjamin tripled with one out in the second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Greg Golson.
The three runs of support were enough for Oklahoma City starter Doug Mathis (3-2). The right-hander allowed four hits over six innings of work and struck out seven on a season-high 115 pitches. Bryan Corey pitched two innings of two-hit relief, and Brian Gordon pitched the ninth to complete the shutout and earn his second save of the season. Tacoma starter Luis Munoz (0-3) took the loss after surrendering all three runs early.
Max Ramirez had his first three hit game of the year to pace the RedHawks in the game one win. Seven different players had singles for the Rainiers in the losing effort.
Oklahoma City broke the second game open in the first inning as well. Borbon singled to start the home half of the inning, extending his hitting streak to nine games, the longest run by any RedHawk this season. German followed with a one out single and Ramirez reached on a two-out single that scored Borbon from second. Benjamin then knocked a base hit, and he and Ramirez scored on Royce Huffman's second home run of the year that built a 5-0 RedHawks lead after one.
The RedHawks added a run in the third, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh to take a 9-0 lead. The Rainiers tallied their lone run in the 18th inning of the day, scoring an unearned run in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring.
Elizardo Ramirez (1-3) picked up his first win of the season with five innings of scoreless work. Chris Seddon (1-3) took the loss after allowing six runs over four innings. Borbon, German, and Golson had three hit apiece for Oklahoma City in the second game, while Huffman and Benjamin had two each as the RedHawks compiled 16 hits in the win.
The doubleheader sweep was Oklahoma City's first since April 15, 2007, when the RedHawks took two from the Memphis Redbirds. The RedHawks and Rainiers split the four games series at the Brick, with Tacoma winning the first two games 8-3 and 9-1, respectively. Oklahoma City took the final games of the series on Monday and closed out the eight game homestand with a 6-2 record.
The RedHawks have Tuesday and Wednesday off before opening a four game set in Las Vegas on Thursday evening at 9:05 pm.
