Carolina Mudcats News Release

Birmingham, AL --- Travis Wood won his second straight start, supplemented by a season-high 18-hit campaign by Carolina as the Mudcats knocked out Birmingham 12-5 at Regions Park on Tuesday night.

Wood (W, 2-3) scattered seven hits over a season-high seven innings en route to his second consecutive win. Wood pitched around leadoff baserunners in six of his seven frames while lowering his ERA to 1.36 from 1.38, third best in the Southern League.

Meanwhile, offensively Carolina (13-19) clubbed around previously-unbeaten Birmingham (21-9) starter John Ely (L, 4-1) for nine hits and seven runs over just 4 1/3 innings. Eric Eymann and Chris Heisey each had three hits, including Eymann's first homer of the season in the second inning. Heisey went 3-5, lifting his average to .374, second highest in the league.

Carolina constructed its largest inning of the season in the fifth, leading 2-1, and sending 10 hitters to the plate and scoring six times against Ely and reliever Matt Zaleski. The Mudcats plowed to a 12-1 lead in the seventh with four more runs against Zaleski, keyed by a two-run double by Chris Kroski.

In all, seven Mudcats had two or more hits and all nine starters had at least one in the victory, which snapped Birmingham's five-game winning streak.

The Mudcats moved to within four games of first place Huntsville, which lost to Chattanooga 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Justin Mallett (0-1, 5.40) starts Wednesday's matinee at 12:05 PM ET against Biran Omogrosso (3-0, 2.18).
