Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - Melky Mesa bashed his league-leading eighth home run in the bottom of the seventh and a duo of Charleston pitchers shutout Asheville as the RiverDogs blanked the Tourists, 2-0, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of 4,409 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Scoreless through six innings the RiverDogs seized the 2-0 advantage with two outs when Abraham Almonte was hit by a pitch and then trotted home on Mesa's two-run blast over the left field wall on an 0-2 count.

With the victory, the RiverDogs won for the third consecutive night, and improve to 16-14 on the season while the Tourists fall to 13-16. The game was the 26th consecutive contest the RiverDogs have played without a day off, and the triumph hands Charleston a 13-13 mark during that span. The club also split the first eight-game homestand of the season, 4-4, and remains unbeaten on Saturdays.

During the four-game series, in which Charleston won 3-games-to-1, RiverDogs pitching allowed only five runs. For the four-game series, the pitchers struck out 40 Tourists and walked only six.

Charleston starter Manny Banuelos, who did not factor in the decision, pitched five scoreless innings, allowed one hit, a walk and fanned eight in his first appearance since returning from the disabled list.

The win went to reliever Casey Erickson (2-1), who pitched the final four frames and allowed two hits and punched out three.

Asheville starter Robinson Fabian (1-2), whose fastball reached as high as 96 mph on the Riley Park speed gun, was the hard-luck loser as he pitched seven complete frames while scattering five hits and striking out 10.

Charleston accumulated five hits on the night with Mike Lyon leading the way with a pair as Brian Baisley and Almonte each secured one to go with Mesa's seventh inning bomb.

RiverDogs pitching limited the Tourists to only three singles with Jordan Pacheco, Kiel Roling and David Christensen each accounting for one.

After a rare day off, the RiverDogs embark on an eight-game road trip through Kentucky beginning with a four-game set against the Lexington Legends, an affiliate of the Houston Astros. Charleston manager Torre Tyson will give the ball to 6-10 righty Andrew Brackman (0-4, 4.55) while Lexington manager Tom Lawless counters with right-hander Robert Bono (4-1, 1.61) in the first game of the series that is set for Monday at 7:05 p.m.
