Jaxx pound Barons 14-4

Birmingham, Ala.- The Diamond Jaxx brought the lumber on Saturday in Birmingham. West Tenn takes game three of the series, after dropping the first two to the Barons 14-4 at Regions Park.

The Jaxx got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Leadoff man Mel Stocker ripped a single to start the game and Ezequiel Carrera walked to put two on the bases. Marshall Hubbard picked up his first RBI of the series with a line-drive base hit to right scoring Stocker from second base. Greg Halman took a fast ball deep and gone to left. Halman picked up his ninth homer of the year now has a league leading 27 runs batted in. The Jaxx led 4-0.

The Barons pulled within three in the bottom of the second when Stefan Gartrell smacked his sixth home run of the year off of Jaxx starter, Justin Souza.

Justin Souza (1-1) was good for the Jaxx going five innings, allowing just the one run on one hit. He struck out four and walked one. Souza in his last two starts has yielded just one run on six hits in 10 innings pitched.

The Jaxx sent 15 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth. Ronnie Prettyman led the inning off with a double, followed by a single from Brent Johnson. Matt Mangini singled to center scoring Prettyman from second. Ezequiel Carrera scored Brent Johnson on an RBI fielders choice. Marshall Hubbard picked up his second RBI in the game with a single that scored Carrera. Adam Moore followed by being hit by a pitch and Greg Halman would walk to load the bases. Javier Brito hit a line drive off the right field wall off of Barons reliever Ryan Rote clearing the bases and giving the Jaxx a 10-1 lead. The Jaxx went on to score four more to give the Jaxx their largest output of the year scoring 10 runs in the inning and leading 14-1 after six innings.

The Barons did add three runs off of Jaxx reliever Aaron Cotter but it was not near enough.

The loss went to starter Kyle McCulloch (3-2) for the Barons. After giving up four runs in the first McCulloch never gave up any more runs.

Every Jaxx start would get a hit in the game and four Jaxx collected multi-hit games. Five Jaxx collected multi-RBI games.

Game four of the series comes up today at 2:05 as the Jaxx look to even the series and two apiece. The newest Diamond Jaxx starter, Steven Hensley will make his Jaxx debut after a dazzling start in Low-A Clinton. Hensley has begun the year 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 16 strikeouts to no walks. He will make his Double-A debut today. He will be opposed by Aaron Poreda (1-3, 2.01) for the Barons.
