Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - Two home runs by Stefan Gartrell including a grand slam lifted the Birmingham Barons past the BayBears 9-5 on Sunday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium, pulling the Barons to a ½ game behind the BayBears for first place in the South Division.

Gartrell's first blast was of the solo variety as he took Hector Ambriz (2-2) deep in the third. Amrbiz allowed another tally in the third as Robbie Hudson singled home John Shelby who doubled with two outs.

Birmingham (11-5) tossed the BayBears (12-5) around in the fifth as two walks and a single loaded the bases and pushed Ambriz from the game. Vince Bongiovanni entered and proceeded to give up a sac fly to David Cook, making it 3-0 Barons. Two batters later, Gartrell struck again with a slam to the deep left on top of BayBear Mountain.

Down by seven, the BayBears didn't blink as they quickly battled back in the bottom of the fifth. Mark Hallberg scored on a single by Gerardo Parra while Yunesky Sanchez came home on a wild pitch from Brian Omogrosso (2-0). Bryan Byrne smacked a two-run double, and the BayBears were only facing a three-run deficit.

That's as close as the BayBears would get. A double steal resulted in Jared Price scoring in the sixth. Evan Frey's sac fly got that run back in the eighth before Cook drove home another run with a sac fly in the ninth.

Barry Enright (0-0, 3.07) works for the BayBears on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. as they play game three of their series with the Barons at Hank Aaron Stadium. For tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
