Ortega to Make Major League Debut Tonight

SALT LAKE CITY (April 25, 2009) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced today that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Anthony Ortega from Triple-A Salt Lake and optioned right-handed pitcher Rich Thompson to Salt Lake. Ortega is scheduled to start for the Angels in tonight's home game against the Seattle Mariners.

Ortega, 23, has appeared in three games for the Bees in 2009, owning a 1-1 record and 9.88 ERA. Named the Angels Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2008, Ortega finished the 2008 season with a 5-0 record and 2.52 ERA in six starts for Salt Lake. The native of Venezuela signed with the Angels as a nondrafted free agent on October 13, 2003.

Thompson, 24, saw action in three games with the Angels in his first stint with the club in 2009, registering a 0-0 record and 2.70 ERA out of the bullpen. He has appeared in three games for the Bees in 2009, owning a 1-0 record with a 4.50 ERA. The Hornsby, Australia native began the 2008 season with the Angels and appeared in two games for the Halos last season. In 10 games for the Bees in 2008, he went 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA. Thompson signed with the Angels as a free agent on February 13, 2002.
