BC School Superintendents Honour Giants

April 17, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL) Vancouver Giants

VANCOUVER BC - Each year, the BC School Superintendents Association recognizes individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to support and enhance public school education in the Province of British Columbia.

On Thursday, April 16th, the Vancouver Giants were recognized by the BCSSA as the recipient of the 2009 Award of Recognition. The Vancouver Giants Hockey Team started the 'Read to Succeed' program six seasons ago and since its inception has grown into a very successful program, last year involving 98 schools and 10000 students. The success of this program was achieved with the support of sponsors CIBC, Save On Foods and Campbell's Soup.

The success of the Read to Succeed Program has been so great that the Province of British Columbia took note and recognized the positive influence it was having. With the support of the Ministry of Education and Act Now BC, the program was expanded province-wide to include all six BC based Western Hockey League Franchises.

'Read to Succeed is an excellent opportunity to engage children in physical activity while having fun reading,' said Vancouver Giants VP Dale Saip. 'The connection to our players has assisted in drawing out their potential and encouraged each student to excel academically, athletically and personally. To be recognized for this Award is an honour. The School Superintendents are a vital part of our education system and to be singled out as a difference to our community is a proud moment for our franchise.'

You can catch all the action on WHITE SPOT GIANTS HOCKEY, which can be heard on AM 650. The TERASEN GAS PREGAME SHOW will begin thirty minutes prior to each game, followed by all the action at the top of the hour. Dave Sheldon, Jay Janower and Brook Ward will bring you the call of all the action for GAME ONE this Saturday from the Pacific Coliseum. SHAW TV will also carry all the games LIVE, with Dan Russell and Bill Wilms providing the call of the game.
