LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

Vs. Hartford (4/8): Left wing Mark Bell scored a shorthanded breakaway goal with 21 seconds remaining in the game to edge the Hartford Wolf Pack past the Manchester Monarchs, 4-3, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. Center Gabe Gauthier, right wing David Meckler and left wing Matt Moulson tallied for Manchester. Left wing Patrick Rissmiller, center Mike Ouellette, center Artem Anisimov and Bell scored for Hartford. Monarchs' goaltender Jonathan Bernier (22-24-4) took his 24th loss of the season with 29 saves on 33 shots. Wolf Pack netminder Matt Zaba (24-10-0) earned his 24th win of the season stopping 28 shots. Manchester went 2-for-5 on the power play. Hartford was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

At Worcester (4/10): The Manchester Monarchs edged the Worcester Sharks, 3-1, at the DCU Center on Friday night and the Portland Pirates (38-31-3-7, 86 points) topped the Providence Bruins (43-28-2-6, 94 points) to clinch the final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. This is the first time in the Monarchs eight year history that they have not reached the Calder Cup playoffs. Right wing Trevor Lewis, left wing Scott Parse and left wing Matt Moulson scored for the Monarchs. Left wing Lukas Kaspar tallied the lone goal for the Sharks. Monarchs' netminder Jonathan Bernier (23-24-4) earned his 23rd win of the season stopping 28-of-29 shots. Sharks' goaltender Thomas Greiss (29-24-2) took his 24th loss of the season with 18 saves. Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Worcester was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

Vs. Portland (4/11): The Manchester Monarchs finished the 2008-09 season with a 5-4 loss to the Portland Pirates at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. Center Gabe Gauthier, right wing Trevor Lewis, left wing Matt Moulson and defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov scored for the Monarchs. Center Tyler Bouck, center Nathan Gerbe (2), defenseman Matt Generous and right wing Colton Fretter tallied for the Pirates. Monarchs' goaltender Daniel Taylor (7-4-2) took his fourth loss of the season stopping 21 shots in 48 minutes of playing time. Monarchs' netminder Jonathan Bernier (23-24-4) stopped all three shots he faced. Pirates' goaltender Kevin Briggs (2-3-0) earned his third win of the season stopping 25-of-29 shots. Manchester went 1-for-2 on the power play. Portland was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.

MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

The Hartford Wolf Pack (46-27-3-4, 99 points) leads the Atlantic Division followed by the Providence Bruins (43-29-2-6, 94 points), the Portland Pirates (39-31-3-7, 88 points) and the Worcester Sharks (42-35-1-2, 87 points) for the four playoff spots in the 2009 Calder Cup playoffs. The Manchester Monarchs (37-35-0-8, 82 points) were eliminated from the playoffs on Friday night when the Pirates beat the Bruins for the final position. The Lowell Devils (35-36-2-7, 79 points) trail the Monarchs by three points for sixth place. The Springfield Falcons sit in last place with 60 points (24-44-8-4).

Manchester set new season records for the least number of wins (37), the most losses (35), the most shootout losses (8), the fewest goals scored (211), fewest points (82), fewest overtime losses (0) and fewest shutouts (5).

The Monarchs finished the 2008-09 season with a record of 4-6-0-0 in their last 10 games.

The Monarchs are in 12th place in the AHL on the power play. The team is 63-for-358 with the man advantage for a 17.6-percent rating.

Manchester has stopped their opponent 322 times on 378 power play opportunities for an 85.2-percent rating this season, good for fifth place.

The Monarchs have a winning record on two days of the week, Wednesdays and Fridays. Manchester is 8-4-0-1 on Wednesdays and 13-8-0-4 on Fridays. The Monarchs are 8-15-0-0 on Saturday's and 4-6-0-2 on Sunday's this season.

When the Monarchs score first, they have gained a point in every game but six. Manchester is 25-6-0-5 in the 36 games where they have scored first.

Manchester is 22-6-0-3 when they have the lead following the first period. They are 26-3-0-3 when leading after two periods.

The Monarchs are undefeated when scoring four or more goals (15-0-0-0) and are 17-5-0-3 when they tally three goals in a game.

After going 2-4-0-1 in the month of October, the Monarchs went 7-4-0-2 in November, 7-6-0-1 in December and 3-9-0-1 in the month of January. Manchester was 9-3-0-1 in February and 6-5-0-2 in March. The Monarchs finished the season with a 3-4-0-0 record in April.

Center Marty Murray's (15-39=54) leads the Monarchs with 39 assists and 54 points.

Murray has five points (1-4=5) in his last six games.

Right wing Trevor Lewis (20-31=51) ranks second in overall scoring and in goals with 20 tallies. His 31 assists are also ranked second on the Monarchs.

Lewis also leads the Monarchs with four shorthanded goals this season which ties a season record for the Monarchs.

Lewis has 10 points (4-6=10) in his last seven games.

Left wing Matt Moulson (21-26=47) leads the team in scoring with 21 goals in 54 games this season. His 47 points are ranked third on the team and his 26 assists are fourth.

Moulson has 10 points (5-5=10) in his last seven games.

Moulson surpassed former Monarchs' center Michael Cammalleri in all-time goals scored with 74 tallies over three seasons. He is also ranked sixth in assists with 85. Moulson has sole possession of fourth place all-time in scoring with 159 points.

Center Gabe Gauthier's (12-30=42) assists rank third on the Monarchs squad and his points are in fourth.

Gauthier is also ranked fourth on the Monarchs all-time assists list with 95 helpers over three seasons. He is also ranked ninth in goals scored with 49 tallies and is in seventh place with 144 points.

Left wing Scott Parse (15-24=39) ranks fifth on the Monarchs roster with 39 points.

Reigning AHL Rookie of the Year right wing Teddy Purcell's (16-22=38) eight-game scoring streak (7-9=16), the longest scoring streak by a Monarchs player this season, came to an end when he was held off the scoreboard in the 5-2 loss to Providence on Friday, February 20. The longest scoring streak in Monarchs history is center Michael Cammalleri with 25 points (14-11=25) in 14 games from October 29, 2004 - November 27, 2004.

Purcell is the team's third leading goal scorer with 16 tallies on the season in 38 games played. He is also ranked in sixth place with 38 points.

Purcell's four-points (2-2=4) on Saturday, February 14 made him the 20th player to tally four points in one game. The franchise record for the most points in a game is five points (0-5=5) by center Jared Aulin on December 21, 2002.

The second-year right wing was recalled to the Kings on February 23. In 40 games with Los Angeles this season, Purcell has 16 points (4-12=16) and four penalty minutes.

Center Justin Azevedo (12-24=36) picked up four points (1-3=4) in the Monarchs 7-2 win over Lowell on Saturday, February 21 to become the 21st player in Monarchs history to score four points in a game.

He currently ranks seventh on the Monarchs squad in points.

The rookie center holds a five-game assist streak (0-6=6) recorded from January 21 - 31, 2009, the longest assist streak for a Monarchs player this season.

Defenseman Joe Piskula leads the team with a plus/minus rating of plus-11.

Left wing Vladimir Dravecky is the only Monarchs player to appear in all 80 games this season. The second year winger has 24 points (6-18=24) in those 80 games. Dravecky joins defenseman Joe Corvo (2001-02), left wing Jeff Giuliano (2003-04) and defenseman Chris Schmidt (2004-05) as the only players to play in every Monarchs game in a season.

Defenseman Alec Martinez leads Monarchs blueliners with 23 points (8-15=23).

Center Brian Boyle was recalled by the Kings on Friday, March 27 and has been in Los Angeles ever since. In 28 games with the Kings this season, Boyle has five points (4-1=5) and 42 penalty minutes. Over the last two seasons, Boyle has collected 10 points (8-2=10) and 46 penalty minutes with the Kings. The second year center appeared in 42 Monarchs games this season and registered 21 points (10-11=21) and 73 penalty minutes.

Defenseman Davis Drewiske was recalled by the Kings on Friday, March 20. In 17 games with the Kings this season, Drewiske has three points, three assists, and 18 penalty minutes. He collected his first NHL point, an assist, in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. The rookie blueliner has 14 points (1-13=14) and 94 penalty minutes in 61 games with the Monarchs.

Rookie defenseman Thomas Hickey has recorded seven points (1-6=7) in his first seven games this season. The 6-foot, 192-pound native of Calgary, Alberta, made his professional debut on Wednesday, April 1 when the Monarchs topped the Lowell Devils 3-2 in a shootout. Hickey collected two assists in his debut, the most points scored by a defenseman in their pro debut with the Monarchs. He scored his first goal on Friday, April 3 in the Monarchs 3-2 loss to Worcester.

Netminder Jonathan Bernier registered his fifth shutout of the season when he stopped all 25 shots he faced in Friday's 3-0 blanking of the Falcons. He currently has a record of 23-24-4 with a 2.40 goals-against-average and a .914 save-percentage in 54 games with the Monarchs this season.

On Wednesday, April 1, Bernier was named the Reebok X-Pulse/AHL Goaltender of the Month for March. Bernier appeared in 12 of the Monarchs' 13 games during the month, going 6-5-1 with a 1.97 goals-against-average, a .927 save percentage and two shutouts. Bernier began the month with five consecutive victories, allowing a total of six goals in those starts. He posted a 24-save shutout in a 1-0 overtime win vs. Hartford on Mar. 6, and was named the game's third star after stopping 27-of-29 shots in a 3-1 loss to Lowell on Mar. 13. Bernier helped keep the AHL's top offense at bay with 37 saves, allowing only two power-play goals, in a 3-2 shootout loss to Hershey on Mar. 22, and turned aside all 18 Lowell shots in a 3-0 victory on Mar. 24.

Bernier's six-game winning streak after stopping 152-of-159 shots in 365 minutes and 31 seconds of playing time to set a new season high winning streak came to an end when the Monarchs fell to the Devils on Friday, March 13. The longest winning streak by a goaltender this season prior to Bernier's six-game streak was when goaltender Daniel Taylor (7-4-2 record, a 2.66 goals-against-average and a .909 save-percentage) won five straight games from February 4-16. Taylor's five-game winning-streak came to an end on Friday, February 20 when he let in the season's three fastest goals, 58 seconds apart, in the first period against Providence. The fastest three goals scored in a game in the Monarchs franchise history were scored 57 seconds apart when the team was in Lowell on March 19, 2006.
