Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE - Greer Stadium was electric on Thursday night as 6,951 fans, the biggest Opening Day crowd in recent years, witnessed Nashville Sounds kick off the 2009 season with their 7-5 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs.

The Sounds' top two prospects worked together as the Sounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Mat Gamel knocked in Alcides Escobar on a double down the right field line in the bottom of the first inning.

After New Orleans took a 2-1 lead in the second inning, Gamel tied the game when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Angel Salome in the bottom of the third inning.

The visiting Zephyrs took back the lead when pinch-hitter John Lindsay singled to left field that brought in Michael Ryan in the fourth inning. Ryan led the way for the Zephyrs, going 3-for3 with a walk and three runs scored.

Escobar's first Triple-A hit for the Sounds was a slow grounder to second base that brought in Jason Bourgeois in the bottom of the fourth inning making it a 4-3 game. Angel Salome also recorded his first Triple-A hit as he singled to left field in the fifth inning.

Hernan Iribarren singled on a suicide squeeze that brought in Brendan Katin to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Wes Littleton was tagged with the loss after surrendering three unearned runs in the eighth inning to give New Orleans a 7-3 lead. All three runs were scored after Gamel's throwing error to first base.

Nate Field (1-0) picked up the win after getting Escobar to fly out to right field on two pitches in 1/3 of an inning. Brian Sanches got the save, but allowed a late home run by Gamel in the ninth.

Nashville starter Sam Narron surrendered three runs off six hits in five innings of work, while striking out two. Chris Smith struck out five batters over two innings, including four in the bottom of the sixth after Brett Hayes reached on a wild pitch.

The teams continue their series on Friday night at 7:00 pm Greer Stadium as right-hander Mike Burns makes the start for the Sounds. Right-hander Burke Badenhop takes the hill for the Zephyrs.
