Big Games, Big PromotionsMarch 31, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL) Wheeling Nailers
With just 3 games remaining in the regular season the Nailers are tied with the Johnstown Chiefs for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Nailers would lose a tie-breaker to the Chiefs though so the Nailers need a big late season surge to pass them in the standings and qualify for the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
Come out to WesBanco Arena this Wednesday and Friday evenings and cheer your lungs out! It's crunch time Nailers fans and a down to the wire finish like this is what ECHL playoff excitement is all about!
The Nailers will be keeping a close eye on what's happening in the other games in the league this week and especially in Cincinnati. The Cyclones host the Johnstown Chiefs for three big games on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The Nailers will be rooting for Cincinnati to win as many games in that series as possible thus knocking the Chiefs down the standings and giving the Nailers the opportunity to pass them with some wins this week. Cincinnati is in 2nd place in the North and trying to catch 1st place Trenton and also hold off 3rd place Elmira for playoff seeding.
That's the short-term situation as the Nailers will really just be focused on winning their own games and trying to pass Johnstown. But if the Nailers get hot in their remaining games they can still catch teams further ahead on the ladder including Elmira and even 1st place Trenton (since the Nailers play them twice this week). It's crazy and exciting and somewhat complicated to try to figure it all out but what it boils down to is the Nailers need some wins and they'll be advancing to the Kelly Cup Playoffs for the first time in three years!
The Nailers take on the first place Trenton Devils Wednesday at 7:05 at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling is 7-2-1 against Trenton this year, is unbeaten against them at home, and has won the last 4 encounters between the two teams. But the Devils have gotten hot and are aiming for the #1 seed in the North Division. A Trenton victory clinches a playoff spot for them.
Friday night the Nailers play the Dayton Bombers at WesBanco Arena at 7:35 in the last home game of the regular season on Fan Appreciation Night. Dayton has been eliminated from post-season contention but has knocked off the Nailers the last 4 times they have met. Additionally, the Bombers have announced they are suspending operations following this season so this last weekend of hockey for them will be an emotional one for the team and they will looking to finish on a positive note as they try to play spoiler to the Nailers.
Saturday night at 7:00 the Nailers travel to Trenton, NJ to take on the Devils. It is the last game of the regular season and it could come down to the very last play whether the Nailers will make it to the playoff or not.
The Nailers have some awesome promotions lined up to conclude the regular season.
