Moose Sacrifice Four Points In Week 23

The Manitoba Moose only earned two of a possible six points in Week 23, splitting their series with the Hamilton Bulldogs and dropping a 3-1 decision to the Toronto Marlies on Sunday. With 93 points, the Moose maintained their first place status in the AHL, one point ahead of the second-place Milwaukee Admirals, who have two games on hand on the Moose. Moose Captain Mike Keane scored back-to-back goals against Hamilton, while goaltender Cory Schneider earned the only win of the week Friday night at Copps Coliseum.

Friday, March 13, 2009: Manitoba 4, Hamilton 3

The Manitoba Moose kicked off their six game road trip with a 4-3 victory against the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday night at Copps Coliseum. Jason Krog, Mike Keane, Guillaume Desbiens and Michael Grabner notched goals for the Moose, while goaltender Cory Schneider earned his second victory over the club by stopping 31 shots.

Saturday, March 14, 2009: Manitoba 1, Hamilton 5

After earning a 4-3 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday night, the Moose dropped a 5-1 decision to the club on Saturday in front of 4510 fans at Copps Coliseum. This loss snapped Manitoba's six game winning streak and was the club's first loss on their current road trip. Captain Mike Keane scored the lone goal for the Moose, while goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 26 shots in only his sixth loss this season.

Sunday, March 15, 2009: Manitoba 1, Toronto 3

The Manitoba Moose saw their losing streak drop to two games after suffering a 3-1 loss to the Toronto Marlies on Sunday afternoon. The Moose now hold a 1-2-0-0 record on their current six-game road trip that will continue in Rochester on Wednesday night. Michael Grabner scored the only goal for Manitoba while Curtis Sanford stopped 20 shots for his second regulation loss this season.

NOTES ON THE NORTH: Despite their loss Sunday afternoon, the Moose maintained their first place status in the entire AHL, the North Division as well as the Western Conference. With 93 points, the Moose are still five points ahead of the Griffins for the division lead and one point ahead of the Milwaukee Admirals for first place in the AHL. In terms of possible first-round playoff opponents, the Bulldogs are seven points up on the Marlies for third in the North Division, while the Marlies now hold a five-point edge on Syracuse for the final playoff spot.

ROAD WARRIORS: After three games on their current six game road trip, the Moose hold a 1-2-0-0 record. The swing continues Wednesday night in Rochester (March 18) before the team travels for games in Chicago (March 20) and finally Rockford (March 21). The Moose have already won 22 games away from home (22-9-0-3) which is the second-most in team history. Last season, they set the AHL franchise record with a 23-14-2-1 mark when playing away from the MTS Centre. Their best year away from home overall was in 1998-99 when they went 23-10-8.

Upcoming Opponent

The Manitoba Moose continue their six game road stretch in Rochester on Wednesday, March 18th. So far this season, the Moose are 5-1-0-1 vs. the Americans.

Player of the Week Nominee

Michael Grabner

For the second time this season, Moose winger Michael Grabner has been nominated for AHL Player of the Week. Grabner appeared in all three games the team played this week and recorded his sixth game-winning goal of the season, as well as two assists...On Friday night, after the Hamilton Bulldogs had fought back to tie the game at 3 in the final minute, Grabner fired home the game-winner with eight seconds left to lift the Moose to their 44th win of the season. He also added an assist in the first period. After being shutout Saturday, Grabner set-up Manitoba's only goal in Sunday's 3-1 loss to Toronto. Grabner continues to lead the Moose in goal-scoring with a career-high 25 goals and he is now tied for second in overall scoring with 40 points. Grabner now has six points in his last five games. He also leads the Moose with 196 shots and was +2 this week to leave him +20 overall.
