Admirals Grill Chops 6-2

March 5, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Milwaukee Admirals News Release

Milwaukee, WI - The Milwaukee Admirals had six different players find the back of the net, including two who posted Gordie Howe hat tricks, as the Ads cruised to a 6-2 win over the Iowa Chops on Thursday night at the Bradley Center.

Milwaukee forwards Kelsey Wilson and Hugh Jessiman both got in a fight, scored a goal, and picked up an assist on the night, giving them bragging rights at the water cooler after the game.

"I didn't even know I had it," explained Wilson, "until [Jessiman] came into the box and said "hey, two Gordies tonight!"

The power-plays proved to be a positive for the Admirals as they scored on two of the three chances, bringing them back into the game at both times that they were down by a goal.

"We did a great job on the power-play, it really turned out to be the difference in the game tonight," said Admirals Head Coach Lane Lambert. "We were down both times and then we were able to score on the power-play both times and gain some momentum back."

The final score was a bit deceiving as the first period proved to be an extremely hard-fought battle, as the Chops got onto the board first. Just 1:52 into the game, Petteri Wirtanen skated the puck into the Admirals zone and handed it off to Matt Beleskey, who in turn found Eric Boguniecki waiting at Drew MacIntyre's back door for a perfect one time pass and shot over his leg pad to take a 1-0 lead early on.

At 7:01 of the period the Admirals answered back when they were on the power-play, thanks to the help of Hugh Jessiman. It was Cal O'Reilly who dished it back to Cody Franson, setting him up for his usual rocket hard slapshot from the point. The shot was executed perfectly for Jessiman to tip the puck past the Chops netminder David LeNeveu for his 16th goal of the season.

Iowa made it 2-1 with just over five minutes left in the 1st period with a little bit of luck. On a clear attempt, Cody Franson's stick snapped in half, while Ryan Dingle was there to scoop the puck up and deke MacIntyre to the glove side. It was Dingle's 8th of the season and it was unassisted.

Once again, the Admirals tied it up on the man advantage. After working it around the zone beautifully on a power-play, Wilson dished a behind-the-back pass in front of the net to Andreas Thuresson. The goalie didn't even see the pass and Thuresson had a wide open net to fire it over his blocker. Nick Spaling also received an assist.

Scott Ford scored his third goal of the season with just 8.5 seconds remaining in the first to give the Ads a lead they wouldn't relinquish. LeNeveu was screened when Ford blasted a slapshot through traffic and he couldn't even see it coming. The assists were given to Hugh Jessiman and Mike Santorelli on the go-ahead-goal.

The Admirals would get goals by Patric Hornqvist and Ryan Maki in the second period and Kelsey Wilson in the third to complete the scoring.

Hornqvist's marker was the fifth straight game that he has lit the lamp, while O'Reilly returned from his first NHL call-up to post three assists on the night. MacIntyre stopped 28 shots to earn his AHL-leading 28th win of the season.

The Admirals and Chops are back at it on Friday night at 7:00 pm at the Bradley Center. The first 3,000 fans will receive an Admirals hat, courtesy of Express Promotions.
